For today we are going to be looking myopia and theory on vitamin D, their correlation and how we can possible use this knowledge to our benefit.

Myopia and Vitamin D

For those of us who have been following our lessons and discussions previously you would already be abreast with myopia is or may be when we mention and may probably get a better insight with regards to today’s discussions.

But for the benefit our any new reader who may have found our blog let’s do a quick recap of myopia. Myopia is a refractive error and is popular known amongst the layman to be shortsightedness. Myopia may be stable or progressive (pathological) and in most cases demand only a pair of glasses for correction.

Now as we grow especially within the ages of infancy and about 10 - 12 years our eyes undergo lots of development and growth and it’s this growth correlates with the power of the eye for someone to be emmetropic (the ideal eye) or have a refractive error.

Now scientists found out that dopamine levels in the system has a direct effect on the eye ball’s growth and also found that vitamin levels has direct relation to the dopamine levels that may be available in the retina to control the eye ball’s growth.

This means that directly or indirectly vitamin is responsible for the signaling process that goes on within the retina and the eye ball to control is elongation or growth to emmetropization or the ideal eye.

And so when this is in shortage or the growing child is not getting enough as they grow it may have a direct relation to and act as a possible risk factor to the development of myopia in the child.

Vitamin D

Good news is that vitamin D is easy to get as our system tends to produce enough quantities with the help of exposure to the sun. Please note that too much exposure may be detrimental to your health though.

You may also get vitamin D from certain foods and there is also the option of vitamin D supplementation. And so based on this theory children to who tend to be indoors all the time may develop myopia due to inadequate vitamin D this also goes to support another theory on near work which would be looked at later.

Conclusion

And so even as we learn about these let’s also encourage our wards to appreciate the outdoors to ensure that they get enough vitamin D for their system. Let’s also ensure that they eat well and rich in healthy nutrients and always take them for regular checkup.

No one recognizes the value and importance of vitamin D except for the residents of Alaska and cold regions that know the existence of long winters throughout the year

Indeed, the value of Vitamin D goes beyond what many know and because of the tropics they hardly ever give it. Another look, thanks so much for reading and your feedback, have a nice time
