Introduction
Myopia otherwise known as short sightedness is by far the most prevalent of the refractive errors across the globe and one of the most prevalent ocular conditions world wide. The rate at which myopia has been increasing over the years became alarming especially in the eastern part of the world making it a public health concern and a canker to battle with.
This led to many researchers focusing on the condition to be able to understand its pathophysiology and how best we could tackle the condition from various angles and fields of healthcare including genetics, nature vrs nurture all other parameters that could be look at.
For our discussions for the week we would be taking a look at the theories one after the other and for today we would be discussing the theory that centers around near work and how it may have an impact on the development and progression of myopia.
Near Work and Myopia
According to animal studies and the different researches conducted by healthcare professionals and others within the eyecare industry it is believed that near work is a proponent to the development and progression of myopia.
The reason been that the more one engages in near work constantly with less regard for distant activities or work the blur effect produced in the eye forces the eye to either increase it's power or act a stimuli to the eyeball continuously growing to accomodate the near rays that accomodation may be putting extra effort to focus.
This is more particular in kids or children who are still within the development phase thus up to the age of 10 to 12 years old. For adults this may not necessarily be the case however it could also be the reason why you prescription may be changing every year or so.
This theory also supports the fact that nerds, geeks and those who may be into academia doing near work all the time tend to have refractive errors and most often are seen with glasses. However, more research is been conducted on this and until this theory is finalized we entreat our readers to consider it as such and may put in measures or habits in place to help protect their vision.
