Hello everyone,

The state of our country demands that we create massive awareness about the effects of waste products on our country. Indiscriminate waste disposal is slowly polluting our environment as a result of negligence and to a larger extent ignorance. This is mainly due to the low literacy rate causing most people to lack the proper knowledge surrounding these things.

As a result, waste materials are lingering everywhere due to mass littering as both youngsters and adults do not seem to care about harming the environment. What then happens is that these pollutants would be drained through gutters and streams, ending up in the sea and damaging our water bodies.

If we are going to fix this atrocity, some steps must be taken.

The government has to be involved if we are going to eradicate this menace properly. First of all there should be campaigns on most national television channels educating people about the need to maintain a sanitary environment.

One thing covid taught me was that, most people change once they learn about the negative effects their actions have on their lives. If people were able to adhere to the safety precautions of covid 19 and strictly maintained social distancing among themselves, then we can certainly deal with mass pollution.

There should also be garbage trucks providing house services and bringing refuse from various households to the refuse dump across the country. This is because, most people are simply impoverished and cannot even afford to send their refuse to the garbage site due to extreme hardship.

Also, all traditional plastic bags must be banned and only permit the use of biodegradable bags. That way, regardless of the extent of littering, they will break down eventually and form part of the soil organic debris.

Recently i was going through my TikTok account where i found a video of a guy i follow who is from America. his aim is to travel around the world and currently he has travelled more than half of the world countries. He is currently in Ghana and in this video he visited a beach in Accra where plastics where all over the place. In the said video he couldn't even hide how he felt about it, he kept on saying "Ghana should do better" repeatedly and at that point i was ashamed especially at a time where Ghana is one of the place to visit during the Christmas holidays.

We don't have to always put the blame on our government but also on ourselves to keep our surrounding clean. Even if we have these facilities in our hands we wouldn't still use them. It all runs down to our attitude

My final year project is on recycling activities in the informal sector. Hoping to create awareness of the need to integrate and coordinate such activities on a national scale because there are a lot of resources locked in the waste we generate. As one man's waste is another man's treasure
