Allium Cepa is the scientific name for the vegetable known as Onion. The onion, also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is a vegetable that is widely cultivated from species of the genus Allium. Its close relatives include the garlic, scallion, shallot, leek, chive, and Chinese onion.

The onion has many impressive health benefits. I am here, with this article to let you know about some of these benefits.

Onions contain various vitamins, minerals and potent plant compounds that have been shown to promote health in many ways. Onions are packed with nutrients. Onions are nutrient-dense, meaning they're low in calories but high in vitamins and minerals.The vegetable is high in vitamin C, vitamin B as well as potassium.

Onions can improve heart health. Onions contain antioxidants and compounds that fight inflammation, decrease triglycerides and reduce cholesterol levels, which may decrease the chance of heart disease risk.

Onions are loaded with Antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that inhibit oxidation, a process that leads to cellular damage and contributes to diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Red onions are rich in antioxidants such as anthocyanins, which are powerful plant pigments that may protect against heart disease, certain cancers and diabetes.

Onions also contain elements that help in the protection and fight of cancer. Consuming vegetables of the Allium genus like garlic and onions has been said to lower risk of getting certain cancers such as stomach cancer.

Onions help control blood sugar. Due to the many beneficial compounds found in onions, such as quercetin and sulfur compounds, possess anti-diabetic effect. Which when consuming them may help reduce high blood sugar.

Onions may help improve digestive systems' health. Onions are a rich source of prebiotics, which help boost digestive health, improve bacterial balance in your gut and benefit your immune system.

All in short, Onions are a good source of vitamins and potassium and fights against diseases. They give meals extra flavor and as well as garnishment.
