Did you know that there is a hidden section of the internet that is much larger in capacity than the portion of the web that you use every day? This hidden part is known as the Deep Web.

What is the Deep Web?

Deep Web is a term that refers to parts of the World Wide Web (www) that are not indexable by search engines. If likened to an iceberg, the Deep Web is the part of the iceberg that is below the surface of the water. Although it cannot be seen, it is estimated that the Deep Web has a very wide capacity which is about 4-5 times larger than the Surface Web (the web that you can see).

When you carry out daily online activities such as opening the E-commerce web, replying to emails, or reading blogs, at that time you are accessing the Surface Web or Visible Web. This section can be seen by internet users and search engines so that it can be indexed by Google. In contrast to the Deep web whose existence is hidden so that it cannot be indexed by search engines.

Is the Deep Web the same as the Dark Web?

Until now, there are still many people who think that the deep web and the dark web are the same two terms. That is why many people associate the term Deep Web with negative things. In fact, Deep Web and Dark Web are two different terms and cannot be considered the same.

Much deeper than the Deep Web, you will find a part of the internet known as the Dark Web. The dark web is a part of the internet that is not indexed by search engines and can only be accessed through a special web browser.

The Dark Web operates with a high degree of anonymity. You won't be able to find it using common web browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or others. The most common software used to access the Dark Web is The Onion Browser.

If again likened to an iceberg, then this Dark Web is at the bottom end of a submerged and dark iceberg. So, the area is smaller than the Deep Web. The Dark Web actually contains various types of sites, but until now it is better known as a website that contains illegal activities. You should avoid this Dark Web because you could run into problems trying to access it.

What is the Contents of the Deep Web?

The deep web contains content that cannot be seen by search engines such as data behind firewalls, internal company documents, customer data, and others. But you need to know that some of the biggest parts of the Deep Web include two things, namely:

  • A collection of protected databases, both private and public. The database in question is not connected to other areas of the web, so it can only be viewed and searched from within the database system itself.

  • An intranet is an internal network used by companies, governments, or educational facilities to communicate and control private aspects of their organizations.

How to Access the Deep Web?

As I explained above, the Deep Web refers to parts of the internet that search engines cannot identify. These sections are password protected or intentionally made so that they cannot be crawled by search engines. Content or data on the Deep Web is intentionally hidden from the Surface Web to protect the privacy of its users. So most likely, you've been accessing this Deep Web on a daily basis.

For example, when you access your finances online, you can log into the system using your user id and password. You certainly do not want if the information in it can be searched by other internet users through search engines. Therefore, the page is hidden from the Surface Web and cannot be indexed by web crawlers.

Is it Safe to Access the Deep Web?

The Deep Web is a relatively safe part of the internet for you to visit, especially when you compare it to accessing the Dark Web. However, accessing the Deep Web is not without some risks of cyber attacks.

You need to remember, that the Deep Web contains sensitive data that is often targeted by criminals. That is why you need to protect access to your account or database using a strong password. In addition, when accessing personal information, you should avoid public Wi-Fi networks because they are vulnerable to being used by cyber hackers to view sensitive information in your account.

Conclusion

Although the Deep Web is relatively safe to operate, you should still be careful when accessing it because cyber hackers are always looking for ways to steal sensitive data in it.
