The Diary Game: 07-18-2022 "Reading Evaluation for Incoming High School Students"

School year ends and now this new school year is about to start. For the past two years, we only had modular distance learning, but it changes now. We are about to have an implementation of face to face classes in all grade level from elementary and secondary.

We, as part of the reading team, we give an evaluation to incoming high school, or we call it as Grade 7 students. Although we only had few days of enjoying our school vacation, most of us in our English department voluntarily participated to evaluate and assess incoming students to our school.

We already had this reading tutorial since last March, we really wanted to evaluate our students reading and their comprehension in English as well. It’s really hard for us to know that there are really students who are struggling in reading. That is why we decided to give intervention like providing audio visual materials and other reading instructional devices to help those students.

Since last week, one week right after we had our completion ceremony, we started the enrollment in all grade levels and most importantly we assess the reading of the new students in both English and Filipino. But we separately have different evaluation to the Filipino team.

After we did our reading evaluation for those freshmen students, we discovered that there are still students who read word for word and very poor in comprehension. That is why in the afternoon, we talked the problem together and decided to continue our reading program for students who really need assistance. We also prepared a schedule for each of us teachers and assigned students to give remediation to those students. Hoping in this little way, we could help improve their academic status.
