“Kindness is spreading sunshine into other people’s lives regardless of the weather.”

Hello beautiful and empowered women of Steem Women Club. Today, I want to share with you the experience I had with the children of Cordova Alternative Resource for Education (CARE) Center in Cordova, Cebu.

Cordova Alternative Resource for Education is a day care center for children whom most of the parents could not afford to send their children to school. Therefore, the goal of the center is to educate these young minds through tutorial classes and engage them in activities that will develop their mental being and social relationship.

When I was still working in a private school, I was a Math Club moderator. I decided to conduct an Outreach Program with my Mathletes (Math Club members). As a club moderator, I had the privilege to choose which charity we would want to visit and support. My heart always belongs to those children who have dreams, ambitions, and goals, so I chose to visit and support the CARE Center with my Mathletes.

After getting the approval of the school principal to bring my students to Cordova to conduct the outreach program, I also needed to send a waiver to the parents of my students. Fortunately, a lot of my students got their waivers signed by their parents. I was so happy because I won’t just be able to help the children of the CARE Center but at the same time, I had the opportunity to let my students experience the beauty of kindness and helping other people in need.

It was Saturday when we decided to conduct the outreach program since my students had their classes on weekdays. I gathered my students in the school at around 6:00 am, and when everyone has arrived, we rode on our school bus and went on our way to the center.

When we arrived, the children were already gathered, and after few minutes of preparation we have started the program with a prayer.

My students began introducing themselves, and as well as the children of the CARE Center. Since there were a lot of children who came to the center, I have developed the “Kapatiran” system. It is where my students would choose who would be their “kapatid” (brother/sister). They would partner themselves with at least three children in the CARE center. Then, they would start to get to know them and tutor them in reading, writing, counting, basic operations in Mathematics, and the likes.

After the tutorial activity, I let my students play games with the children. They were really enjoying the game, running after, and laughing to each other.

Also, the children really loved the next game wherein they have to reach for the things we tied on that squared thing. Those were packed goods and toys.

Time flies so fast, it was lunch time already. While the children and my students were playing, we have prepared the food and the table for lunch. When everything was set, they were called to eat. Time for feeding! Happy eating everyone!!!

It was really a nice experience being able to help those unprivileged children in our community, to impart knowledge to them, and to share your blessings to them. Also, being able to bring my students to see the goodness of helping, hoping someday they would also do the same.

My heart was full after bidding goodbye to those children. They were really thankful and hoped to see us again. Well, I hope to see them soon and be able to extend help and share my blessings again.
