TUPAC AND BIGGIE: WAR BETWEEN COASTS

All lovers of rap and hip hop have heard, at least once, 2Pac and the Notorious Big. Both are considered by many to be the most influential rappers in history. Tupac was even chosen by the prestigious Rolling Stone magazine as the most important rapper of all time, and both were nominated several times to win Grammy awards. Unfortunately, it is to this day that many remember his great fight more than his outstanding careers.

Tupac (right) and Biggie (left). West Coast and East Coast. Los Angeles vs. New York.

They were both from New York, United States. In fact, Notorious Big was for some time the opening act for Tupac. Although we don't really know when the feud starts, we do know why it started: money. Who was to blame for the conflict? Death Row Records, founded and headed by Suge Knight, and located in Los Angeles, California. Some believe that from this label they set a trap, which led to a misunderstanding and began the beginning of the end of their careers.

Tupac was attacked in the Death Row studios in 1994, where he was shot 4 times. Fortunately, he survived. He pointed to Biggie as the culprit of what happened, despite not having much evidence of this (in fact, some time later it was discovered that it was probably the warning of a drug dealer linked to the crimes in which Tupac was involved). This triggered one of the biggest chucks, beefs, or disses in history. The Notorious Big released "Who shot ya?", a song that was written before the incidents, but that seemed to continue the conflict and to which Tupac responded: after his time in jail (accused of sexual crimes), he released " Hit them up” against Biggie and those close to him. The division was clear.

The confrontation ended in the worst way: with both dead. First, in 1996, Tupac was killed after a battle with Mike Tyson, in Las Vegas, with four bullets. In 1997, 6 months after 2Pac's death, it was time for Biggie. The rapper was shot to death. Both died in the same way: through a drive-by (shot from a hit-and-run car). In neither of the two cases did justice manage to clarify what had happened.

In very broad strokes, this is the story that we popularly know as the conflict of East against West. Thousands of stories, documentaries, conspiracy theories and opinions have been circulating for years in the media, the internet and social networks. Many believe that it was all a play by Suge Knight, creator of Death Row, as a marketing strategy. The truth is that both rappers are dead, and there is something that cannot be denied: we missed their talent. The conflict managed to increase their visibility and fame, but, after all, it may have been the reason for their deaths. The truth is that we will never know what really happened.
