This beautiful Jain temple is located in the Aravalli hills aprox 90 kilometers from Udaipur, in Rajastan. On the way, you can visit Kumbalgarh Fort, which is also worth a visit. The main goal of our day trip was the Ranakpur Jain Temple. Ranakpur Jain Temple is a 15thcentury temple that also has another name. – Chaturmukha Dharana Vihara. This name derives from the fact that it faces the four directions (west, east, south and north). This temple is considered not only one of the largest, but also as one of the most important and holiest of the Jain temples in India. To the Jains it is an important pilgramage site. But it is also of importance to visitors to India. The temple is dicated to the prophets: Rishabhanatha, Mahavira and Sarvarthasena. The temple has beautiful carvings, which are one of the reasons the temple is famous.

When we arrived and stood in front of the huge, massive structure in white marble I was impressed.
Then we entered the complex. From that very first steps into the temple, we were amazed by the splendours. Intricate carvings and ornaments. Sculptures and the rays of light between the pillars is an absolute delight.

The design and architecture

The temple consists of a series of 29 halls. When you look at the supporting pillars knowing that the temple has 1444 pillars and not two of them are alike, I was impressed! Inside, the halls are covered with intricate carvings, monuments and religious statues. I was amazed with the pillars and the carvings are absolutely marvelous.

You will see walls with deities and sculptures. A large sculpture of an elephant in one of the hall. At another part of temple, we saw carved elephant heads. Whoever the artists were, these carvings shows great skills.

Look at the ceiling! Geometric design and intricate carvings all over. It wasn't possible to have time enough to study closely each on the ceiling and pillars. But I did take some time to look closely at some of them. When studying the carvings on the ceiling, I did notice there are nymphs and / or maybe they are deities playing instruments. They might be playing music.

The construction of the temple began in the 15th century. On one of the pillars there is written message, saying that it was a man named Deepaka who was the architect behind the construction. I think I have read somewhere that he was a businesman who had vision. It seems that this work kept going until 1458 CE. According to the guide there are reports saying that the building process lasted longer.

Ranakpur Jain Temple - A place of divine beauty and one of the most impressive temples I have seen in India.
