For a long time, it has been my plan to visit the grounds of the old factory. A few weeks ago I took the time to go to the factory one morning. I walked all the way around it. That’s why the light changes on the photos. Unfortunately, it was closed with a fence, so I could only look at it from the outside. I also noticed that a building process is going on. It looks as if there is a future plan for the area and the factory itself. On the fence to the northern and western side the history of the factory is documented.

The history of “Spritten”
The story about the factory goes back to the year 1846, when the brand “ Aalborg Akvavit” was established. The original location of the factory was not here, but right in the centre of the city. I don’t have a photo of the original place, but it was right on the main street called Vesterbro. To day there is a bronze statue of a bull, placed on the exact location. The statue is called “The Cimbrian Bull”. This bull is also one of the symbols of Aalborg. It was the association “De Danske Spritfabrikker” who payed for the statue that is placed at the very spot where the factory stood until 1931. The name of the Cimbrian bull was chosen, because it derives from the name of a Celtic tripe called Cimbri, who once lived in northern Denmark. To the Cimbri the bull was a symbol of strenght.
Around 30 years later (1877) this was the largest factory in the country. Eventually it merged with several smaller manufactures producing spirits. That’s when the association “De Danske Spritfabrikker” was established.
By 1923 all the spirit distilleries in Denmark were part of this association, which then had the monopoly on all the production. In the year 1931 the new factory by the Limfjord (present location) was inaugurated by the Prime Minister. It was not only new buildings that were new. They also started to use new production methods. In 1973 Denmark became member of the EU. The membership was the end of the monopoly of “De Danske Spritfabrikker”. I don’t know exactly why, but new rules and laws was probably the reason.
By reading all the boards as I walked around the factory, I learned a little more about the history of Aalborg. One of the boards had information about the future plan. The plan is a microdistillery. In addition to use part of the buildings where the story behind the brand will be told. A great idea to keep the history alive like this.

Somehow there is something about these old buildings, besides being part of history. I like the idea of preserving the buildings and make use of them again.
