NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST | CAPTURING THE NIGHT | WEEK 14 | Catania

Nighttime in Catania is truly beautiful, colorful, and cozy. My walk took me through several spots, starting at the central square, where the city’s most famous landmark is located - the Cathedral of Saint Agatha, dedicated to the saint considered the patroness of Catania.

The city center is compact, and most of the key attractions are within walking distance, so there’s no need for public transport. You can see it all in a single day, but taking it slow with more time allows you to truly appreciate the charm of Catania. That said, if you do need it, Catania has a very good public transport system, though the ticketing system is based on time duration. There’s also a metro available.

Right next to the square, there are plenty of small streets filled with bars and restaurants, creating a lively and pleasant atmosphere.

Close to this area is Porta Garibaldi. This magnificent gate, completed in 1768, was dedicated to King Ferdinand I and his Austrian wife, Maria Carolina of Habsburg-Lorraine.

Without the details that make the city so vibrant - like flowers, ceramic figures, or the little figurines on a fruit and vegetable cart – Catania wouldn’t be the same.

The legend of the Moorish heads dates back to around 1100, during the Arab rule in Sicily. A young woman fell in love with an Arab man, but when he confessed he had a family in the East, she killed him, cut off his head, and used it as a pot for basil. The basil grew lush and vibrant, inspiring local artisans to craft pots shaped like Moorish heads, which became iconic decorations for balconies and plants.

And finally, Santa Filomena District - While it’s famous for its excellent dining options, the district is much more than just food.

It turns out that the owners in this area, which used to be quite unpleasant, have transformed its appearance by using lots of lights, flower pots, and have turned it into an artistic hub where exhibitions, book presentations, and wine tastings take place. Their idea is to feed both the body and the soul. Very cozy and peaceful 180 meters, which is the length of this district. 💗
