THE SCAFFOLD

The time I have dreamed,
How many years were truly life!
Ah, how much of my past
Was merely the false life
Of an imagined future!

Here by the riverside
I rest without reason.
This empty flowing,
Anonymous and cold,
Figures life lived in vain.

Hope that reaches little!
What desire is worth the intent?
And a child’s ball
Rises higher than my hope,
Rolls further than my desire.

Waves of the river, so light
You are not even where you seem,
Hours, days, years, so brief,
Pass—green or snow-laden—
That the same sun makes perish.

I spent all that I did not have.
I am older than I am.
The illusion that sustained me
Was queen only on the stage:
She undressed, and the reign ended.

Soft sound of slow waters,
Greedy for the gone banks,
What sleepy memories
Of foggy hopes!
What dreams, the dream and life!

What did I make of myself? I found me
When I was already lost.
Impatiently, I abandoned myself
Like a madman insisting
On what was disproven.

Dead sound of gentle waters
Flowing because they must,
Take not only the memories,
But the dead hopes—
Dead, for they must die.

I am the future already dead.
Only one dream ties me to myself—
The delayed and obscure dream
Of what I should have been—the wall
Of my desert garden.

Past waves, take me
To the sea’s oblivion!
Bequeath what I will not be,
For I surrounded with a scaffold
The house yet to be built.
