A Disaster is Coming

Why do people buy insurance? Why do people buy candles and keep supplies of bottled water? Why do people buy cans of food, or packages of dried goods? Why do people buy fire extinguishers or by smoke alarms? It isn't because they expect disasters to happen, but because it is easier to react to a disaster if you are prepared for it. For years, I have carried a first aid kit, and an emergency blanket in my car. I have never had to use them but I try to be prepared.

My son lives 3500 km away from me but is only a few hundred km away from the Yellowstone "super volcano". The likelihood of this volcano erupting is miniscule, but I have warned my son to always keep his vehicle fueled, and always keep in the back of him mind what to do in the case it does erupt. A couple of decades ago, Mount St. Helen's erupted depositing ash over 1200 km away (my parents were visiting Calgary at the time). If Yellowstone does erupt, the ash is expected to be deposited to a depth of 3-10 mm (almost 1/2 inch) where I am ... almost 3000 km away.

Imagine where you are in the world. Can you predict what would happen if a super volcano went off in Yellowstone Park? What should you do in that event?

The video at the top of this post describes the worst case scenario of an event that occurs every 12,000 years. It has been predicted that it will happen in just over 25 years. The worst case scenario has been predicted based on available evidence from previous cycles. One of those include the concept of the Great Bottle Neck. This is the observation that everyone is descended from a few thousand survivors of a massive volcanic event roughly 70,000 years ago. One of the symptoms of this 12,000 year cycle is increased volcanic eruptions. Other observations include finding massive herbivores found flash frozen with grasses found in their mouths.

Regardless of whether the event will happen or not, the real question should be "How will you live your life for the next 25-years?". Most of the people reading this will be too old in 25 years to worry about the repercussions. Some will waste their time living in fear. Others may adopt a survival mode, learning skills and stock-piling supplies and teaching their children how to survive. It does make an interesting discussion.
