Worldcoin recently launched World ID, a "digital passport" that employs Orbs, eye-scanning machines, for human identity verification. Nevertheless, Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin highlights four significant concerns with the project.
The first concern is about privacy, as iris scanning could inadvertently capture sensitive data like sex, ethnicity, and medical conditions.
Secondly, the limited availability of Orbs might hinder accessibility, making it challenging for everyone to obtain a World ID.
Thirdly, centralization poses a risk, with the possibility of malicious manufacturers using compromised Orbs to create fake human identities.
Lastly, security issues emerge when AI-generated photos or fake 3D prints are mistakenly approved, and when World IDs become vulnerable to being sold, rented, or lost through phone hacking.
Buterin advises Worldcoin to collaborate with other projects to address these challenges and establish a robust proof-of-personhood system. However, he cautions that building such a system won't be quick or easy and may take years to find a viable solution.
WorldCoin's native token WLD can be grabbed from several exchanges including Bitget .
Despite my reservation for the project I feel the concept is unique and could allow developing countries access the financial opportunity in Web3 while entrenching global democratic values.
I am also holding it on Bitget because they also rolled an airdrop campaign too.
