Water mud fishing festival.
Farewell to the month of Shravan. The rainy season is counting down the hours waiting to leave. Even a month ago, there was plenty of water all around. Paddy fields and low lands were submerged due to rising river and canal water. And in the water of these fields, various native fish like kai, shing, magur, pabda, putti, shrimp, tengra floated.

At one time in rural Bengal, at the end of the monsoon, fish was caught in the water of these low-lying lands. Even though the village is Bengali, the traditional scene of irrigated fishing is not common now.

As the water level in rivers and ponds increased during the monsoon, the water spread around. And various species of native fish float in the water. With the intense heat of the month of Shravan-Bhadra and the water of the river receding in the sun, the fields that had been submerged a few days ago dried up a lot. Although the water dried up, various fish were trapped in these places. And at that time the people of the village went down into the muddy water and caught fish with their hands. Kneeling in the hot sun, fishing in that water is also one of the entertainment of rural Bengal. This trend has been going on for hundreds of years, which is still flowing today.

Surrounded by rivers, Tangail district is surrounded by several rivers including the Jamuna-Dhaleshari. In the evolution of time, the size of these rivers is getting much smaller. Even then, in the monsoon season, all these rivers became toi-tambur in the water coming down from the upper reaches. Not only rivers, but also ponds and canals increase. As the water of rivers, canals and ponds merges, paddy fields and low lands are submerged. Renu pona of different native species of fish flows in that land with water.

At the beginning of the month of Sravan-Bhadra, therefore, fishing can be done in canals, ponds and fields. A little watering is done with a bucket of water in the house. The pond water is irrigated with a pump machine. The fishing festival starts only when the water is completely empty. Rejoicing with joy, the people put their hands in the mud of the ponds, canals and beels and brought the fish one by one. In addition to the fish farmed in the irrigated pond, various native species of fish are found. And in the pond there are different species of native species including shoal, taki, gajal, putti, khalse, vedi, kai, magur, singh, tangra.

One such mud fishing festival was seen in Mahmudnagar, a char area in Tangail Sadar Upazila. On Tuesday morning, an arrangement was found in a paddy field next to the Tangail-Mahmudnagar road.

According to the locals, every year at the end of the monsoon, when the water recedes, the low lands of the area become such a fishing festival. In that festival, men and women, boys and old people all get together and fish with their hands. There is an unwritten competition among them as to who can catch more fish before the knees in the muddy water. But in the past, different species of native fish were caught in this way, but now not many species of fish are seen.

Due to the constant decline of fish sanctuaries, the presence of these native fish has decreased. At the end of the day, someone goes to the local markets with the caught fish. Some people organize cooking at home. Sugran spread in the whole area after tasting all these five mixed fish of mud water and more than one species.
