S-V Photo Challenge #35 | Fronds, the leaf of a fern by @patjewell

Fern leave called "fronds"

Walking on the patio this afternoon I saw the most beautiful picture of the sunshine captured by the green leaves of one of the ferns leaving the sporangium on the underside of the leaves clearly to be seen.

The leaves almost appeared translucent and to be dancing in the sunlight.

I just had to capture it and then I remember the invite I received from my Steemian friend @nexcis to take part in this contest. So, here I am.

Sporangium is formed from a Greek word which means “seed”. It is the little “black dots” or capsules under the leaves. The spores reproduce from these capsules. Spores are the reproductive cells which can grow into a new organism or plant.

A group or cluster of sporangium is called a “sori”.

A cluster of sporangium

I have seen these capsules many times before and I've always been fascinated by the perfect placing on the leaves. I’ve also noticed that they are not always on all the leaves nor on all the ferns.

If your fern is planted in rich wet soil and where there is light the sporangium will grow into full plants.

And that brings me back to the leaves of the fern which is called “fronds”.
The shape, size and textures of these leaves differs from species to species.

Fronds are different to normal leaves from plants.

Normal plants – the leaves assist with photosynthesis
Ferns – the leaves assist with photosynthesis and reproduction

Sometimes the fronds are also referred to as “fiddleheads”.

Commonly the fronts of ferns start as a little ball which then grow and change shape. Before it change into a full leaf it looks like the neck of a violin. That is then also the stage in which they are called “fiddleheads”.

The biggest advantage the leaves of ferns have for humans is that it purifies the air.

Next time when visiting a plant nursery make sure you put a fern on your trolley.

Hello my friend, you made a very beautiful photo.
I love plants very much, and reading about how the fern reproduces was very illustrative, I really liked the explanation.
Thanks for sharing.😊🌸

Thank you for your visit and kind words.
I also love plants but gosh, I don't have "green fingers". My sister can grow anything from nothing. Whatever she touch turns green. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Greetings friend @patjewell

Interesting plants with their leaves of particular beauty, I am struck by the number of black dots arranged in a uniform way, it is an unparalleled attraction.

Good post.

Thank you for the visit and the engagement with my post. It is appreciated.
I must say, I was also blown away yesterday when I saw the leaves shining like that and showing the capsules so clearly.
Unfortunately what I captured with my phone was not as clear as what the eye could see.

What a great beauty! The great designer, the Almighty made everything beautiful in their time. Imagine this sporangium. The dark spots made them outstanding. I have not seen such here in Nigeria.

I have seen these capsules many times before and I've always been fascinated by the perfect placing on the leaves. I’ve also noticed that they are not always on all the leaves nor on all the ferns.

I am fascinated too. Oh, really? They are not always in all the leafs? You could have captured the ones they are not in. Well, this ones are ok. I love them. I also love the fact that they reproduce from the spurs on the leafs.

Thanks for the invite. Let me see what I can do about my entry. Success to you dear friend

Thank you for engaging with my post and your great words. Your words always warms my heart.
What is interesting is that every leaf on this specific fern had capsules on them.
I will check the others in the morning.
The Almighty gave hyenas their laugh’s and fern leaves their beauty spots. How awesome is He indeed!

Hello @patjewell, I believe that this plant is called "ferns", I have seen it with that name here in my country.

Excellent post.

Yip that is correct. Did you know that ferns are actually prehistoric plants? They've been on Mother Earth for many.. many years.
There are over 10,000 different species.

Ps. Thank you for the support and engagement! It is appreciated.

How beautiful... my grandmother had one at home, and I liked to grab the seeds from underneath.

Ah okay. It’s nice to know that there is a Steemian out there who has also seen it
My grandma also had some on the farm but we didn’t dare touched her plants. 😊
