Dear Diary,

I’ve never understood why people say “dear diary.” It’s not like you’re a real person. But maybe I’ll just pretend that you actually are a person. I’ll name you Joe.

Okay.

Dear Joe,

I feel like every time I try to write something I end up staring at a blank page in confusion. It’s not like there’s actually that much to talk about, right? Or should I mention that when I got a muffin for breakfast today, it had a hole right down the middle so that it looked kinda like a donut?

Yeah, it was weird.

Ugh, Joe, I’m just rambling here — I really don’t know what to say. Let me try again.

Dear Joe,

I’m starting to realize that writing a short diary entry is a whole lot harder than I thought it was, and I just can’t get it right. Have I written anything actually worthwhile?

Wait — why do I care?

Joe, I think that there’s no “right” way to write a diary entry. And maybe this diary entry is good enough as it is.

In that case, signing off.
