Epidemic Preparedness Day

Internationally December 27 is International Pandemic Preparedness Day. This day reflect on the need to prevent and fight pandemics. In 2020, the United Nations began this day, learning from the COVID 19 pandemic. Pandemics don’t just jeopardize health, they also disrupt education, jobs, and society of the whole. That's day we learn that we are all: governments and citizens ready and careful to fight any future health crisis. In countries like Bangladesh, this day is even more important as healthcare system has to be improved. The good news is it also teaches us how we can protect ourselves while also working together during tough times.

My mascot- Suraksha Bondhu (Safety Friend)- Made with Canva

My mascot will be named Suraksha Bondhu (Safety Friend). The shape would be like a droplet, symbolising protection against viruses. Sky blue would be the color for the mascot standing for good health and hope and happy smile to spread positivity. Mascot wear a small cap that says "Stay Safe" and pointed a shield for protection.

The mascot would be easy to understand, both with children and adults. It may help send messages about staying safe, and being prepared, even in remote parts of the world.

Changes by this Day

In Bangladesh Pandemic Preparedness Day has been helpful in spreading more health safety awareness. As a result after COVID pandemic almost all people started washing hands regularly, wearing masks, getting vaccinated. This change is more seen in cities but it has slowly started spreading to the villages also.

Seminars, essay competitions, poster making competitions are frequently held in schools and colleges to educate students about pandemics. Special events are organized by local NGOs and health centers too. A lot of attitude has changed now. it is much more important. How to stay safe during a health crisis? Communities are showing how teamwork can make a big difference.

Pandemic Preparedness Day is promoted in Bangladesh by the Health Department, the WHO and the United Nations along with local NGOs. TV, radio, newspapers and social media are also transmit important messages. However, more can be done to make this day even better.

First, We should bring awareness to villages first using the native language. Second, We could teach the children about health through fun activities such as plays or drawing competitions in schools. Third, famous people could promote that everybody shall stay safe.

Better health care in rural areas as well as free vaccination camps are also important. Many people would really benefit from training of health workers to teach people about safety. With these steps, people will see these messages more, and they’ll have a bigger impact.
