Achombo’o ( Breakfast) in Cameroon Cuisine.

Steem greetings all the way from the motherland-Cameroon to all friends on the Steemit ecosystem. It is another day for me to share one of the breakfast recipes in Cameroon cuisine known as “achombo’o”.

The ingredients

This is a common breakfast in Cameroon and can be found in almost all junctions. It's very common to see bachelors early in the morning trying to buy achombo’o. Some households also buy it for breakfast from food roadside vendors.

For me, I always prefer to fry my own at home because most of the ingredients I use those food roadside vendors do not use them.

The Ingredients Used.

  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 nut milk
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup soya beans milk
  • 1 litter of vegetable oil

The Procedure.

Step 1:
I take two cups of water, put it in a pot and boil for about 3 minutes. The water to be used is lukewarm water. The quantity also depends on the quantity of flour to be used.

Step 2:
Take your nut milk and grate it using a grater. For me, I used a strong sieve made of iron wires. This is because the sieve makes it come out smooth, unlike the grater which requires you to sieve after grating.

Step 3:

Add your sugar to the lukewarm water to dissolve. Then add half a tablespoon of salt to neutralize the sugar. I used a whisk to mix it well. Some people used their hands to mix.

Step 4:
I cracked the eggs removed the shells and poured both the egg white and yoke in the already mixed sugar, salt and water.

Step 5:
I poured in the powdered milk and the grate nut milk. I continued to whisk until got a unique mixture.

Step 6:
I added 1/2 tsp of baking powder and 1 spoonful of instant-rising yeast. You can use normal dry yeast without baking powder but I often put baking powder. Whisk it until the yeast and baking powder dissolved.

Step 7:
Add all-purpose flour to the other mixed ingredients and whisk until you have a smooth batter. Add the soya bean powder milk together with the all-purpose flour. Closed the lit of the pot well using a fuel paper and allow it for an hour to rise.

Step 8:
Pour your oil into a pot and allow it to heat at normal heat. Wash your hands with soap and clean water because you gonna used your hand to cut it into the pot. Fry it until it turns brown, remove it and put it in a colander to cool off.

Achimbo’o can be eaten with fried beans or with custard. This morning, I prepared mine with hit lemon grass mixed with lemon. Temperatures these days early in the morning are extremely cold and this mixture will help boost the immune system from catching flu.

Some people will wonder why I put eggs in it, this was to ensure that the achonbo’o should be fluffy.

You can see how fluffy it was because of the eggs.

NB: Your batter should not be too soft and it should not be too hard. When it is too soft or too hard, you will not be able to cut it with your hand.

I hope you all enjoyed reading through this and learned a new breakfast recipe.

Thank you for the support @shiftitamanna

I have never seen this many ingredients in achombo before when I make mine I use just the basic ingredients such as

  • Flour
  • Yeast
  • Sugar
  • Salt
I always thought those were the only ingredients that can be used, thanks to your post I've gotten an understanding that other ingredients can be added well.
    Thanks for sharing
