Okra Soup Recipe: The Process of Preparing okra soup with Pumpkin seeds.

Steem greetings all the way from the motherland-Cameroon. Today, I will be sharing my recipe of okra soup with garri( made from cassava). If you have been reading through my blog I’m share you must have come across one of my articles where I explained a detailed process of garri making. It’s a whole process on its own.

That said, today I will share my okra soup recipe. Everyone has a different way of cooking okra soup but in all, what matters is the end product. My kids and husband first of all do not like okra soup but it’s one of my favourites. I have noticed that my husband usually hates some foods because of the way it was prepared.

Ingredients Used.

  • Okra
  • Fresh Fish
  • Pumpkin Seed (egusi)
  • White pepper
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • njansa
  • Garri
  • Okonghobong (vegetable leaves)
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Crayfish
  • Salt
  • Maggi
  • Hot chilli

N: B The quantity of ingredients depends on the quantity of soup you intend to cook.

The Process.


Step 1
I took my fresh bar fish from the freezer and put it in a bowl to defrost. I usually buy much from the cold store cut it into smaller slices and keep it in case of further use.

Step 2
When the fish is well-defrosted, remove the intestine and wash it well with clean water. Drained it in a colander, put some seasoning cubs and salt and allow it for about 15 minutes.

Step 3
Put a cup of vegetable oil in a frying pan and deep fry the fish, set aside in a bowl. You can as well use fresh fish or beef without frying.

Step 4
Take the pumpkin seed (egusi) select the bad ones and grind or blend it until it is smooth. Put water in a pot and boil, mix the blended egusi with salt and Maggie and pour in the hot boiled water. Closed the pot and allow the egusi to cook for about 45 minutes.

Step 5
Take your crayfish select the bad ones and grind or blend it. Also grind the white pepper, garlic and njansa and put them in the already-boiled egusi.

Step 6
Take your okra put it in a bowl, and sprinkle a bit of salt on it to disinfect it and wash thoroughly with clean water. Cut it into smaller slices. I decided to blend the okra because one of the reasons my husband hates okra is because of the seeds. I had to blend it so that the seeds would not be visible.

Step 7
Pour the blended okra into the other already-cooked ingredients. Stir it gently and add your fried fish/beef, and vegetable leaves.

At this point, add your hot chilli if you love it, add salt and Maggie to taste, add a bit of vegetable oil and stir gently till you get the taste you desire.

Step 8
Boil water and pour it into a bowl, put 2 cups of garri (this depends on the number of people you intend to feed. Closed the lit of the bowl for about 3 minutes. Stir it and the garri is ready. Served it in a plate with the okra soup.

You can also use the soup to eat fufu made from corn flour or pounded yam. At this point, I have come to the end of the process of preparing delicious okra soup and I hope you find pleasure in reading through.

Looking into the the whole kitchen process,I can't wait Over here,Okra soup is one of the best soups.
It is nice when ingredients like these ones you are you are used.
I think,if you want to enjoyed Okra soup,you need spend more ingredients as such.
It really shows that you are a woman that likes good things and better food.
Am hungry of the recipe.
How I wish am there.

Have not ate this soup before, but what really encouraged me is these ingredients that is used to prepare it,it very rich in protein,I would have liked to learn on how to prepare this recipe if am there in Cameroon.
It looks like one of the special delicious delicacy for visitors,the way am looking at it.
The fish and it sizes is attractive.
I think my share is available.

Wow this is a whole new process from how it's done here in my country it's good to know they are different method in preparing okra soup maybe I will also share how it's made over here in Nigeria, the food looks tasty anyways 😋
