World cancer day is a day set aside to give awareness globally about cancer and to promote equal access to cancer treatment. Cancer is one of the diseases that has greatly affected both men and women globally. The truth is some people who have cancer do not know it until the disease has eaten deep into their system. If awareness is made, more than one third of cancer cases would be prevented. Others can only be cure only if it is detected early and treated properly. This is why February 4th is set aside to save millions of lives every year. The theme of this year world cancer day is, 'close the gap: everyone deserves access to cancer care'.
Mascot representing world cancer day
Mascot drawn by me
My mascot is a teddy with a lavender ribbon to support all those living with cancer. This portrays that awareness should be maɗe known by everyone, it's not the sole responsibility of one person. We should involve even our pets by wearing the lavender ribbon on them. Everyone should try in their own wat to create awareness. If awareness is made known by everyone, it will be detected early because people will visit the hospital for check up , then it will be cured and we will defeat cancer. It has been made known that cancer if the second leading cause of death worldwide. With awareness,we can change that.
CHANGES WORLD CANCER DAY AWARENESS HAS BROUGHT TO MY COMMUNITY
In my community, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, a lot of people are now aware of cancer. A lot of people go for medical checkup yearly. They try to find out how to prevent it. Those who have it try their best medically to stop it from spreading leading to their death.ajoruty are me fighting cancer. People especially in Africa are now aware of breast, cervical, prostrate and other types of cancer. People do not run away from their relatives like it was in the past when they know they have cancer, rather, they stand together to fight it.
ACTIVE PROMOTERS
The active promoters of world cancer day are the health personnel and the relatives of those who had lost their loved ones to cancer or who are cancer survivors. Few months ago, health personnel in my community went from school to school creating awareness and also administering HPV vaccination to females. Cancer doesn't show in one's face neither does it select person's depending on their financial status, it can affect anyone.
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE
What should be added to have more impact in my community is that health facilities for medical check up and fees should be accessible and affordable. There should be more awareness campaigns. Cancer patients should not be looked down on or treated as of they did something which brought about the cancer. As the theme for 2024 says, we should close the gap, everyone deserves access to cancer care, not just the poor or the rich, everyone.
