Hi Friends ❤️

How do you do? I trust you're great! I decided to join an engagement contest in this community Today been Saturday 18 March 2023 because it's an election day in my country, yeah the Governorship and State Assemblies Elections. I'm not exercising my franchise because I'm politically neutral, but that notwithstanding I'm watching it live at home, to know what is going on in each polling unit across the country, and from what I'm seeing so far and people's comments I can say that it's peaceful and everything is running smoothly. Let me hint to you about elections in Nigeria.

What I think about Elections in Nigeria:

Nigeria is a democratic Nation as such political leaders are being elected into power by the people through a process known as election since 1998. The election opens an avenue for Citizens of a particular country to efficiently and peacefully choose political leaders by the casting of votes.

Election in Nigeria is transitional, what do I mean? it's improving year after year due to new technological inventions and innovation, again citizens now get to know the true meaning of democracy and their rights. Before now elections in Nigeria used to be bloody, violent here and there, and rigging at the highest order, this cause political apathy among citizens but especially the youth.

Over the years the Democratic system in Nigeria has been questioned, people used to question the credibility of Nigeria electoral process and elections. Our election is normally challenged as not being free and fair and this has posed a serious legitimacy question for our political leaders.

What do you think about the electoral system in your country?

We have a detailed constitutional arrangement and voting system in Nigeria which has helped in converting the vote into a political decision.

How is it done in Nigeria?

BEVAS

In Nigeria the first step is The registration and distribution of the permeant voter's card (PCVS) to citizens.

The body overseeing the affairs of Elections in Nigeria is known as (the INEC) Independent National Electoral Commission, they've been in existence since the adoption of democracy in 1998.

Before the selected election date NOMINATIONS normally take place, where different candidates will be chosen by different political parties for possible election to a public office.

An election CAMPAIGN is a crucial part of the electoral process where a nominated candidate tries to woo the masses to vote for him or her on election day, sensitizing citizens on what his/her government will do for the people and criticizing the opponent.

SUFFRAGE: An eligible age to vote and be voted for is 18 Years.

The TALLY OF VOTES for this there are various vote countings systems like card reader, BALLOT 🗳️ and the BEVAS. But what is using recently is the ballot and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BEVAS) "It is designed to read permanent Voters' cards' authenticity of the voter during accreditation. After voting it is used to upload results from polling units to the results viewing portal in real-time on the election day using the voter's fingerprint or facial authentication of voters"

Is it transparent and fair in your country...

That's why I said from the beginning that elections in my country are transitional, it's getting better year after year and I believe Nigeria will operate a truly democratic system soon where people will hold corrupt political leaders accountable for their wrongs, it's happening gradually the last three weeks ago elections is showing this, before now it has always been two political parties, PAP ~ People's Democratic party, and APC ~ All Progressive Congress, but new Political parties like the LP ~ Labour Party comes in and many of them have elected candidates in Federal Assemblies! Some even overthrew the sitting senators and Governors, so it's a recommended democratic progress

Counting of result going on

BEVAS was fully used for Federal Assemblies Elections, and everyone was satisfied with the outcome of the Election, but not presidential reasons technical challenges and this caused a lot of citizens to be dissatisfied, and feel that their votes do not count, and the result is that there's low turn-up in today's election ~voter's Apathy but so far as I stated before everywhere is calm and peaceful, and the BEVAS are working perfectly well today so the results are counted at the polling units and uploaded in BEVAS. What can I even say then, I hope the will of the people will stand in this election. Well, let's hope for the best.

Assuming there's no fairness and effectiveness as far as elections are concerned, Solutions I can propose to ensure it's being carried out the right way:

Well for Free and fair elections the BEVAS should be fully utilized and put into use, and party agents should be honest and free from corruption. Voters should be sensitized to know their rights not to sell their votes for peanuts. And the will of the people should always prevail to avoid political/Voters Apathy as we see today.

Conclusions:

Election is surely an essential pillar of democracy, it ensures that the government is of the people, by the people, and for the people. It makes it possible for first citizens to exercise their will in choosing political leaders through a franchise. Election help in keeping political leaders in check, knowing that they will be voted out of their seats if they don't perform well, it makes the to be accountable. Thank you for reading me! Your writing here looks like you are in a different Nigeria... Lol. In Lagos where I voted, it isn't free and fair. The elections were purely rigged, and while the BVAS worked, electoral officers intentionally didn't upload results for the presidential election at the polling unit. Today in my poling unit, Igbos were not allowed to vote, although I was able to vote since I am Yoruba, but, then it is wrong on all levels. Also, in some polling units, people were attacked. Currently in Nigeria, we are far from practicing true democracy when it comes to Electoral processes and so many other issues. I hope that some day, we will have a free and fair election. Peace to Nigeria.

Nigeria is a democratic Nation as such political leaders are being elected into power by the people through a process known as election since 1998.

Also, ma'am, it is 1999 and not 1998, the election that brought Obasanjo in was held in February 27, 1999.

Ma'am, it is the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and not BEVAS, and you made a mistake writing PAP instead of PDP.

Thanks a lot ma'am for the post, I really had a nice time reading.

Oh dear I wish you read with understanding instead of anger, then you will read where I stated that elections in Nigeria is still work in progress, that democracy is yet to be achieved. Well as long as I'm a Nigerian and I live here, to the best of my knowledge the national Assembly Elections was uploaded on BVAS. Then again, had it been you've read to learn from my opinion and not to criticized you would have seen where I wrote the full meaning of BVAS in case my foreign friends did not understand.

the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BEVAS) "It is designed to read permanent Voters' cards' authenticity of the voter during accreditation. After voting it is used to upload results from polling units to the results viewing portal in real-time on the election day using the voter's fingerprint or facial authentication of voters"

Well, we have different opinions about certain things, and this is mine concerning elections in Nigeria, we're improving. I will like to read your opinion on this.

You would have understand that it's a typo since I wrote the full meaning.

Concerning the democracy adoption, it's a mistake and thanks for the correction.

I appreciate your time and contribution. Thank you!

I didn't read in Anger ma, I actually read with an open mind, I just didn't see why we should sugarcoat the truth in broad daylight. We are nowhere close to democracy, I did agree with you that the system put in place is a good one considering the level of our democracy, but I will say categorically that we didn't have a free and fair election. Less I forget, for me to come out this open is because I understand the intrigues of what politicians are doing with Nigeria, they are playing chess with our young democracy. I didn't come out at you with anger, I did read your post in a holistic manner and that was why I said you had your election in the areas where Nigerian politicians are trying to be real politicians and not Nigerian politicians.

Thanks for your reply.

I just didn't see why we should sugarcoat the truth in broad daylight. We are nowhere close to democracy.

Again you need to learn how to respect people's opinions your's might not always be right, okay? By the way, we are not on a debate, so hold onto yours while respecting others' views, yes we're not writing to any of Nigeria's Politicians but for our friends here to gets to know situations of certain things where we are living. Thanks

No, ma'am, I am not in any way attacking your opinion and I respect it fully. I was just sharing my thought from my experience. I do not mean to say your opinions are wrong. Please pardon my comments on your post, and if possibly I could delete them since they don't sit well.

I was in no way trying to slam you or make your opinion look wrong, neither was I debating with you ma'am, I was only sharing my thoughts and opinion based on what I experienced first hand. Please I am very sorry if my comment came out wrong. It would be best If I delete them or possibly edit them.

Thanks ma'am

It's okay dear ❤️ don't delete your comments, just that there's how you can express your thoughts without making the other person to feel attacked. For example, first, you said I wrote as if I'm in another Nigeria, gosh that was harsh.
Again you said I sugar-coated the truth in a broad daylight, this too is wrong!

But in all I'm okay, this is social media and this is bound to happen.

It's okay dear ❤️ don't delete your comments, just that there's how you can express your thoughts without making the other person to feel attacked

To be sincere my intentions were completely different. What I meant was that you had a peaceful election in your area and it was commendable seeing that bad politics didn't play out in your area.

Again you said I sugar-coated the truth in a broad daylight, this too is wrong!

Please pardon me, I wrote this because of my first-hand experience, I didn't intend to attack you. Yesterday when I went out to vote, it was a different experience, and while I was in no way affected, my friend who followed me suffered tribal suppression. She wasn't allowed to vote because she was from Edo state. The thugs at the gate kept on clamoring that she was Igbo and no Igbo was going to vote. So I was the only one allowed to vote while she was sent back. I also saw ballot boxes on the floor with paper on my way back home. So when I wrote, I didn't intend that you were not in the same Nigeria, or you were not truthful, I was only commending the fact that election was peaceful and fair in your area.

Please ma'am, forgive my shortfalls.

I hope so too.

The present electoral process has led to political apathy among most verified voters and if this continues, we might end up surrendering this aspect of life to wrong hands.

I said this myself, but as it stands, we are in a democratic country and we practice democracy at our levels. Hopefully, we will grow over time.

Yes, hopefully.
Thank you for engaging.

I did my achievement 1 ten days ago but it is still not verified.please check my achievement 1 and verified thank you.

Got to where I read “Some even overthrew the sitting senators and Governor” and I bursted out laughing. The humour you inserted there was contagious.

Democracy is one government that encourages transparency and accountability. I feel like with the right attitudes, elections will become an avenue to elect good leaders and not a time to take up arms.

Yeah elections makes it possible for democracy to be achieved. That is why Nigeria own is still Work in progress.

You have captured Nigeria election system perfectly. Kudos

I appreciate your commendations thanks 🙏
