Depression: Risk Factors, Symptoms And Treatments [ 04/08/2024]

Hello beautiful people at steemit, happy new week to you all. I hope you all had an amazing day today. So today I'll be writing out of the usual because it's seems very few persons actually pay close attention to what's happening around us as individuals. Today I'll be writing on depression: what I think it is, the risk factors, symptoms and then, the treatment for it.

According to W.H.O(2018), Nigeria is the most depressed country in the world. Nigeria suffers from one the most ignored and misunderstood form of mental disorder. 3.9% ( one in every five adults) of the population in Nigeria followed by Ethiopia, Congo, South Africa, Tanzania Seychelles etc has the lowest number of depressed persons in the world. Depression is the second leading cause of death in 15-29 years globally.Now depression is referred to as low mood, a serious mental illness that negatively affects thinking, feelings and actions

Risk Factors Or Causes

1) Biochemistry: Difference in certain chemicals in the brain may contribute to symptoms of depressive disorder.

2) Genetics: Low moods can run in families as well.

3) Personality: Low self esteem, people who are generally overwhelmed with stress, or who are generally pessimistic tend to get depressed as well

4) Environmental Factor: Continuous exposure to violence, neglect or abuse may make some people vulnerable to depression.

5) Economic Recession: Economic downtown, inflation, unemployment etc are contributions to recent upsurge of depressive disorders

6) Life events such as relationship problem, bereavement, redundancy, illness etc can also lead to depression.

Signs And Symptoms

1) Loss of energy (lethargy)

2) Change in appetite ( bulimia or anorexia nervosa)

3) Sleeping more or less

4) Anxiety

5) Reduced Concentration

6) Restlessness

7) Feeling of unworthiness etc. Please I'd like to say, if you gradually see yourself in this states often times, it's a sign that you're most likely getting depressed, seek for medical assistance or see a therapist.

Treatments

1) Talking Therapy

2) Public Education

3) Proper counselling unit

4) Exercise

5) Diet containing olive oil

6) Anti depressants drugs

In Conclusion

In conclusion, I'd like to say a lot of depressed people we see today that actually commit suicide or other things that are harmful to them is as a result of what they've actually faced or what has happened to them. Yes I understand, but please 🥺, stop trying to hold on to the past, the past is a past for a reason, that's where you should let it be. You can never start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one. You can actually make up your mind to be a better version of yourself and don't let the past eat you up. Once bitten, twice shy is not a spiritual truth , we learn from the past and become strengthened. I wish us all the very best and may never forget ourselves in the course of trying to hustle.

This is very educative, sometimes we go through certain situations in life that mainly lead to or cause depression I believe with this article a lot of us will be able to prevent ourselves from depression
