Well, the vagina is the female sex organ. It is the muscular elastic tube which connects the cervix and vulva in the female reproductive system, and is also responsible for the secretion of liquids as well as enhances pleasure during sexual intercourse. Babies, as well as menstrual blood equally comes out through the vagina.

Douching comes from the word douche. It is actually a French word, which means shower or in this case, it means to wash.

vagina douching simply refers to the practice whereby individuals use water and/or a mixture of other liquids to wash the vagina. They use a tube, to insert this liquid upwards into the vagina. People equally purchase these liquids to use for vagina douching. Often, these liquids contain special perfumes/fragrances to give the vagina a fresh scent after douching.

While the issue of vagina douching being healthy is increasingly getting more popular amongst women, especially teenagers, the fact is there is no scientific evidence to prove this. However science has been able to establish the fact that just like the eye, the vagina is able to clean itself. However, those who practice vagina douching, are putting themselves in serious danger, as we shall be seeing below;

CAUSES

People do vagina douching for the following reasons;

• The number one reason for vagina douching is Vagina Odour. Many people believe that they can get rid of vagina odour by douching. Well, this is a myth, as I will be establishing some facts. First of all, all vaginas have a distinct scent, and every vagina smells different from another. Odour may come about as a result of an infection, or poor personal hygiene. Make sure to bath regular, and wash the exterior of your vagina using clean warm water. Douching is not the solution. Infact, if the odour persists, it could mean you have an infection and you'll be doing yourself a huge favour by visiting a doctor, rather than douching.

• Some individuals douche in an attempt to clean menstrual blood. As I already mentioned above, the vagina is able to clean itself. Just focus on cleaning the exterior with clean warm water.

• Some women douche inorder to avoid sexually transmitted diseases/infections. Again, douching will never prevent or cure STIs. Incase you have an infection, make sure to visit a doctor.

• Some women believe douching can act as a method of contraception to avoid pregnancy. This is a very popular belief. Some women believe that if the vagina can be washed properly after sexual intercourse, then they can get rid of all the sperm cells. This is also just a myth. Douching cannot prevent pregnancy, instead it could lead to complications during pregnancy as we'll be soon finding out. If you're scared of getting pregnant, then practice abstinence.

DANGERS OF VAGINA DOUCHING.

• Vagina douching disturbs the natural functioning of the vagina. It upsets the vaginal flora, as well as the level of natural acidity which is supposed to be present in a healthy Vagina. With all these distortions, the vagina is instead open to multiple attack from bacteria. There is also a high likely hood of getting a STI, as compared to someone who does not douche. Douching could also lead to complications like vagina dryness, vagina irritation, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), bacterial vaginosis (yeast infection), amongst other complications.

• In the long-term, vaginal douching can lead to pregnancy complications such as ectopic pregnancy, and can also lead to difficulties when giving birth.

• It has also been scientifically proven that women who douche are more likely to have cervical cancer, as compared to their peers who do not practice douching.

CONCLUSION

Well I believe the message is loud and clear. Women please do not douche. The vagina is able to clean itself. Focus on cleaning the exterior with warm water and mild soap. Incase you have an infection, please do not hesitate visiting the hospital. Watch your diet and watch your personal hygiene. Continue to live healthy lives...
