Hello steemians. Hope you are doing awesome. I got inspired to write about this particular meal today when I got back from the market very tired and hungry and I needed something easy and fast to eat while cooking was still in process. Soaked garri has been a life saver to many here in Cameroon or in the area where i grew up.
Seriously this meal has a special place in my heart in such a way that I still prefer it to many other meals. I spend the whole of secondary and high school that is basically six years in the dormitory. I attended a dormitory school and as a boarding student,
cold water garri was a life saver. During the period of "warm sun" in school where there was no food and your box was empty due to no visiting or long terms, cold water garri was always available. It was extremely affordable, easy to make and also delicious. That explains the name golden grains and cassava flakes. All you needed was garri, sugar and water to mix together, then you are good to go. The rich garri could contain groundnuts, milk, pear and any other thing that could go with it. Seriously if not for garri I would not have been alive today. I remember a time of dry warm sun(famine) in the dormitory where I ate garri every day for continously one week. Someone would be wondering if they didn't cook for us in school. Yes they did but restaurant time was battle time, most people would end up not having food while some will have very little. Its not as if the food was even delicious. Garri was top notch compared to these meals especially when there was enough sugar, groundnuts and milk.
Till now garri still has a special place in my heart. It has even become something luxurious in our family house in Douala. Of course there is a variety of meals that we prepare everyday at home; eru, Dj, tomatoe sauce, okra and many others
but every body always has eyes on the garri in the cupboard. Its not just me, all of us love cold water garri.
When they do a timetable to buy food maybe for a week or two and a meal has garri, maybe something like garri and eru, we end up drinking all the garri and when its the day to prepare eru, there is no garri to be found.
So they actually hide garri in the house. See eh, to be frank i like garri and sugar more than that pizza of a thing.
Recipe for garri
_1cup garri( either white or yellow garri but yellow is preferable for drinking )
_ 1 and half cup of water
_Sugar according to you taste
_1hand groundnuts
_ milk( optional)
Mix all in a bowl
If you are too hungry and the garri is not enough, leave it in the bowl of water for 5mins to rise
and enjoy.
