Parents should know that the core developmental needs of any child are the responsibility of parents, guardians and care givers. It is also our responsibility as parents to ensure that these needs are met as consistently and fully as possible.
These developmental needs include; unconditional love, appreciation, adequate attention, a safe and healthy environment for growth and development, a high sense of understanding and healthy role modeling.
They also include provision of age-appropriate opportunities, a sense of belonging, and some level of involvement in decision making at home.
Paying close attention to the thoughts, feelings, ideas, efforts, emotions and individuality of our child/ward is one of the greatest steps we can take towards protecting and safeguarding them.
We live in a world where child abuse, exploitation, child neglect and violent are assuming an unimaginable dimension. Abusers are on the increase and their strategies are getting more sophisticated.
More alarming is the fact that close family members, friends, clergy, domestic staff, teachers and relatives are swelling the ranks of abusers in most recent incidences. These are people we hold in trust and would never suspect. Their actions have constituted severe harm to the lives of innocent children.
This means that we need to see protection beyond just being a need or a religious, but a fundamental right. I will see how I can be posting more articles that will help parents to gain more insight into some of the protection issues facing our children today.
To consider the physical and mental health of our children which seems to be at stake. It is no more enough to send our children to the best schools and buying them expensive books and clothes. There is an urgent need to invest more in protecting them.
Let us all start by paying quality attention to the confessions made by our children. In my subsequent articles, I will be sharing some of the confessions gathered from the abused children to further help parents and guardians to know some areas the need to protect their children/ward.
Let me stop here, see you in my next post. Thank you for reading.
