How can you help your community forge a gender - equal world?

Before saying how i can help my community forge a gender equal world, I'd like to define what gender equality is. Gender equality in my terms is the act of seeing everyone be it make or female as humans with equal rights. I'll explain further by a mathematical equation 1+1=2. This simply means that the left hand side is equal to the right hand side, without the equal sign then they're not same.

The male and the female in our country and even the African continent have been viewed as not same because of misconceptions and inabilities of one gender to do one thing or the other. So inorder to forge a gender eual world, firstly i will educate the whole population on what it means to be of a particular gender and what it takes to be either a male or a female.

This will be done through conferences and seminars which will primarily be aimed at disrupting the already created strongholds in the minds of the men and women about gender equality. Then I'll follow by empowering both genders to be able to do what they are supposed to do in a community.

After empowering them then i will entrust roles equally in every sector of life (political, social, economical, spiritual etc) to those who merit the roles. When that is done then we will check on their i dividable performances to see how much impact they both have on the society.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and if i can do this in my area then reaching the world would be a matter of time and consistent learning from the errors we make in the journey.

CAN CELEBRATING WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL DAY INCREASE VISIBILITY AND EQUALITY?

To some extend yes, this will help a long way to increase visibility and equality. In my country Cameroon for example during the women's day, i remember my mom always went to a particular NGO where they taught them how to produce various kinds of stuff like (soap, lotion, paintings, textile etc.)

It is from that experience i knew more about women but only one problem posés itself. And this problem is that most women in my country don't take the themes of this day serious. This day is always a day of celebration and merry for them. Infact if you ask 80% of women what the theme was, they won't give you the correct answer because they Concentrate on the celebration than the purpose of the day.

As beautiful as it is, the attempt of building up the woman always goes down the drain because less of them are eager and willing to take the challenge to meet up to the theme of the day. For example, the theme INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY FOR GENDER EQUALITY was given this year, but you will see less women get into the tech world to make this effective.

Celebrating this day can only increase visibility as it already does, but we will need more to increase equality, and by more i mean more engagement on the lady's side and also the pressure on the government.

ARE THE FEMINISM FIGHT AND THE WOMEN'S RIGHTS FIGHT THE SAME?

Before answering to this question, it would interest us to know what feminism and women's right is. Feminism is defined as the advocacy of women to attain their rights in the society. Meanwhile, women's right are the things that a woman should have in a society.

Though feminism and women's right are related, they aren't the same because one is an act to attain something meanwhile the other is the goal they want to attain. So I'd say that the feminism fight is an act taken by the women to reach their goal of equality in the society.

WHAT DO YOU SAY ABOUT WOMEN IN TOP POSITIONS LIKE PRESIDENTS, PARLIAMENTARIANS, SENATORS, CEOs (CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS), AND COO (CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICERS)? GIVE POSSIBLE EXAMPLES IN YOUR COUNTRY (COMMUNITY)

Seeing ladies in top positions personally make me happy, because it shows how hard working andd determined they are. Actually a woman for me has many more emotions to express and show when ruling over a nation because she's born a caring person. Most times when a man is at the top, he might not take the subject's requests at heart. But for women they do their utmost best to make things work smoothly. I'm not saying men can't do same, but I'm saying that most women are likely to be more caring than men.

I normally get challenged when I see a lady pass in a big car and cruising around town. Like here in Bangangte where i am. This lady was the Mayor of Bangangte in the West region of Cameroon and she is highly respected. She is presently the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Cameroon. She's a very influential lady and the president of Network of Locally Elected women of Africa.

The second person is called Pauline Nalova Lyonga this lady also is a very highly respectable lady in my country. She went to school and passed through different posts like Vice chancellor of one of the best Universities of the country called the University of Buea for 5 years. Then she was appointed the Minister of Secondary Education of Cameroon, the post she presently occupies.

You see one perculiarity of these women is that they all were diligent with their studies and went high in their education, now they occupy great positions in the political sector of Cameroon. If they can do it then every woman too can do it.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD LEADER (GENDER OR MERIT)

Being a leader is a whole process and not because you need a male or a female but it is about several qualities such as:

  • Relationship building
  • Critical thinking
  • Communication
  • Accountability
  • Motivation etc.

You see if any gender is not conformed to these aforementioned qualities then he or she is not eligible for the position of leadership. So i trust and believe that leadership isn't by gender but by merit.

CONCLUSION

Finally brethren, i can say that for an equally balanced generation, both parties must be capable to pay the price needed to attain the post they covet. It has been seen by many ladies mostly that they just covet without having the requisite knowledge required for the post. Leadership is by merit and not by gender. Thank you for reading and i invite @pandora2010, @ishayahchris, @yakspeace and @newtonb to partake in this contest.

I appreciate your definition of gender equality as seeing everyone, regardless of gender, as humans with equal rights. I think that education is crucial in breaking down the misconceptions that lead to inequality and that empowering both genders is an important step towards achieving gender equality.

I agree that celebrating International Women's Day can increase visibility, but it is also important for women to take the themes of the day seriously and to engage with the challenges set out. I think that the pressure on the government and increased engagement on the lady's side are both necessary to increase equality.

I also agree with your thoughts on women in top positions. It is encouraging to see women in positions of power, and I agree that women often bring a caring and empathetic approach to leadership. Thank you for sharing the examples of H.E Courtes Ketcha and Pauline Nalova Lyonga in your community.

Good luck

It will be very wrong for someone to believe that good leadership is gender-based. Gender does not determine whether someone makes a good leader or not. Anyway, gender bias and stereotypes affect how people perceive leadership abilities in women and it needs to be stopped. A woman should be able to hold any position and this can only be possible through consistent education.

Exactly, you've said it all. But hope you know gender equality affects all genders Even though it's women who are always the victims mist times

I guess you should read my post on gender equality, then you will understand my stance on gender equality. Saying that the man should take full responsibility for the home expenses and claim that we want gender equality is wrong
