Dealing With Peer Pressure in the University

Most universities in Cameroon are just resuming and peer pressure is already on the rise as per my experience visiting the university of Bamenda. Dealing with peer pressure in the university can be a challenge for many students, especially in Cameroon where social norms and expectations can be particularly strong. However, there are several strategies that can help students navigate these pressures and stay true to their own values and goals.

One important strategy is to develop a strong sense of self-awareness and self-confidence. This involves taking the time to reflect on one's own values, goals, and priorities, and being comfortable with who you are as a person. By having a clear sense of your own identity and values, you are less likely to be swayed by the opinions and actions of others.

Another key strategy is to surround yourself with supportive and positive influences. This may involve seeking out friends and peers who share your values and interests, or joining clubs and organizations that align with your goals and passions. By surrounding yourself with people who uplift and encourage you, you are less likely to feel pressured to conform to negative behaviors or attitudes.

It is also important to set clear boundaries and communicate them assertively. This means being willing to say "no" when you feel uncomfortable or pressured to engage in activities that go against your values or goals. It also means being willing to speak up and express your opinions and beliefs, even if they differ from those of your peers.

Finally, it can be helpful to seek out resources and support from trusted adults or professionals. This may include talking to a counselor or advisor about your concerns, or seeking out mentorship from an older student or community leader who can provide guidance and support.
