Greetings dear Steemians, I am glad to present to you the first way women rights are being violated in some villages in our beloved country cameroon. I want to share this piece of knowledge in order to sensitise the general public and women in particular to know their rights as women and that they should avoid being victims of such obnoxious and degrading practices.
A customary practice which is discriminatory against the female is compulsory marriage which is given to the father of the female child to choose his husband or future husband without the daughters consent and regarding if she loves the man to be or not.
Some schools of thought tries to justify this obnoxious practice by saying that the father of the daughter knows what is best for the daughter and has experience as he is an elder .
It should be noted that force marriage is punishable under the cameroonian penal code in it's article (356(1) which states thus
Whoever compels anyone to marry shall be punished with imprisonment for from 5 to 10 years and with fine of from 25000frs to 1 million francs.
. Many customs and traditions still perform this degrading practices because it will be difficult but not impossible for the girl child to lodge a complaint against her father.
We therefore call our parents to allow their daughters to choose their own husbands . Choosing for them will violate the right of the woman because she hasn't given her consent to be the the wife of her husband to be.
