Banting and Best his student and a dog treated with insulin
What do you know about the day?
On the 27/07/1921 was the day insulin was first discovered and was made available to Diabetics within a year. On this day, Dr Banting and a medical student did a successful experiment that led to the extraction of insulin. This insulin was tested on the dog as seen on the picture. After which the dog started responding to treatment. Later on thats months later, insulin was isolated and used on humans. A 14 year old boy was the first to benefit and he responded with great prognosis. This was a success. After some times it was given to all patients suffering from diabetes.
Before insulin was isolated, Diabetes was a fatal disease, with no hope of treatment.
Diabetes in simple term is excess sugar found in blood which mostly results when the pancreas failed to produce sufficient insulin in blood.
Insulin (isolated) is now introduced to the bloodstream to compart this sugar.
How do you or your country or your organization celebrate the day?
This day arent celebrated as others maybe because a few are aware of the date. Its not officially celebrated in my country though its a very important date.
Even at diabetics clinics i still doubt if this day is celebrated but i do know some health personnel who may write up something concerning this day. With greater awareness, i guess this day will be celebrated in future especially by diabetes Patients.
What impact does your community gain during and after commemoration?
- Diabetes as earlier mention was considered fatal like there's no treatment for it but today, people with Diabetes can live long healthy lives with just little lifestyle changes , regular checkups and follow up and properly adhering to medication protocol.
- Insulin today is affordable as compared to the past where patients could not afford it, it is also easy to preserve and it last for a longer period of time.
- with all these, the mortality rate of diabetes Patients has greatly reduced and this Patients can live a normal healthy life.
What issue or concern will you recommend
As it's often said "𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲". So, instead of recommending further reduction in the price of insulin, or the means to increase availability, i could prefer to recommend some preventive measures against diabetes
Although Age and Family History are both significant factors in development diabetes, most of the other risk factors are modifiable.
Exercise: Someone who is overweight but exercises properly is less likely to develop diabetes than someone who has a healthy weight but doesn't exercise because exercise helps you to burn out excess calories
Maintain a healthy weight because obesity is one measure risk factors for diabetes
Prevent/manage other non-communicable diseases like hypertension. Most non-communicable diseases exist in a loop, with each one being able to lead to the other.
Eat healthy. Drop junk food, avoid refined carbs, reduce or eliminate refined sugars. Eat more of fruits and vegetables.
Control alcohol consumption. Beer is made of carbohydrate which considerably increases risk of diabetes. Alcohol can also damage the pancreas, leading to Diabetes.
To be on the safe side, monitor your blood sugar at least once every six months. Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) is a simple procedure that costs just 1000F in most hospitals.
