Indigenous knowledge sharing on adaptation strategies to fight climate change.

Climate change affects all and pose a challenge to food shortages and sustainable development in our communities. The impacts are recorded highest in the African continent which as a result are link to food insecurity. With such challenges affecting all its best for decision and policy makers to think base on the available knowledge. In the past years, indigenous people were neglected with the bias of always having an indigenous knowledge which presently now is an important source on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.

These communities how ever in the past years relied on their knowledge to preserve and conserve our environment and also prevent natural disasters. This was because those of them leaving in hazard areas developed strategies to prevent, mitigate and detect early warnings, get prepared and how to respond to such impacts and how to coup after the disaster. All these was as a result of experience which was handed from one generation to another. All these systems made the indigenous people adapt to the changes of climate.

The indigenous knowledge is still highly appreciated in many communities but they face a problem of documenting their strategies thus fear of the lost knowledge. As a result, it’s important for policy makers to understand the indigenous knowledge with their strategies to prevent and adapt to climate change within their communities. Understanding the knowledge form these minorities, policy makers with scientific knowledge will integrate indigenous knowledge so as to bring in development solutions that are natured and socially accepted. This is because these minorities are the ones hid hard and any initiative putting in place to impact their wellbeing should first integrate their knowledge and involve them in participating to bring up intervention strategies.

We need to share indigenous knowledge tools and policies so as to promote resilience in a way to help fight climate change challenges. This will go a long way to bring climate change solutions which will affect small farmers in our communities. Scientific knowledge if left alone will and can not solve the problem of climate change. Thus there is need to get the indigenous knowledge how to detect, prevent and coup after the effect to help bring up a collaborative approach to fight climate change.
