The importance of preserving and restoring ecosystems

Today I will be sharing with you about ecosystem restoration and the importance. Many of us just live their lives as if they are just passing. They care less if the earth is being destroyed from what they do or not. Many use rivers as their dumping sites, others destroying the forest just for commercial purposes. All these have greatly destroyed the ecosystem and it’s time we put an end to these and encourage in more actions to restore the ecosystem back.

Ecosystem restoration means helping in the putting back places that have been destroyed by man for his selfish interest as well as keeping places that are still in their natural state. Strong conserved places that have rich biodiversity produce high benefits like fertile soils, timber and fish, and the forest ecosystem stores most of the greenhouse gases which is a great remedy to climate change.

Restoration can be done in a thousand ways like actively planting of trees, reduce water pollution and limiting pressures in a way nature can regain on its own. It is not easy to put back an ecosystem to its original state. To restore an ecosystem, we need to reduce deforestation for farmlands so that the forest can adapt to climate change.

From now till 2030, we can restore 350 million hectares of destroyed land and water ecosystems which can generate trillions in ecosystem services. Protecting and conserving especially forest ecosystems can reduce more than 20 gigatons of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
All ecosystems be it water or forest can be restored. The initiative to restore ecosystems can be done by real action at the individual level, governments and development agencies to businesses and communities like the case of Kilum ijim forest conservation in North west region of Cameroon. This is because the reasons for degradation are many and changes and can have varied impacts at different scale in time.

Degradation sometimes is as a result of harmful policies like subsidies for intensive farming laws which thus encourages deforestation. Lakes and coastlines are polluted because of poor waste management from industrial activities. All these poor disposal leads to lost of aquatic life.

Restoring an ecosystem helps protects and enhance people’s way of living who depend on such ecosystems for their resources. When ecosystems are restored, It regulate diseases and limit the chances of natural disasters and also protect endangered species of fauna and flora. Restoration goes a long way to help us achieve all the Sustainable Development Goals.
