It is a very important group in geopolitics
Before 2014 it also is known as G8 if we include Russia in this list.
Recently Donald Trump said G7 is outdated and it needs up-gradation and for the upgrades, we can include 4 more countries in G7 and make it G11.
Donald trump suggest 4 countries-Russia, India, South Korea, and Australia.
Although many European nations may block the entry of Russia and Russia also given a statement in this regard- the G-7 invitation to Russia and India to target china and also said if China is not a part of this group then we also don't want to join this group.
The Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev also said Moscow wasn't enthusiastic about US President Donald trump's invite to 4 countries for G-7 as it didn't want to join any bloc or alliance against China." trump wants to get a number of countries together for some form of joint opposition to China....that's the current strategy of the Americans. Russia also supplies China with jet engines because China continues to struggle in developing reliable jet engines of its own.
