Want to explore the beaches near Yogyakarta but not sure if it is worth the drive?
Just one hours drive from Yogyakarta, Pantai Parangtritis is the most popular beach in this area of Java island, further along this stretch of wild coastline is Pantai Parangkusumo, and Pantai Pelangi. Both of these beaches are much quieter than Parangtritis beach with not much in the way of beach activities. Also along this stretch of coast and within easy day trip distance of Yogyakarta is Depok Beach, a fishing village which is well known for it's delicious seafood.
Parangtritis beach is not the typical picture postcard white sandy beach of Indonesia, but it does have beautifully soft sand which is black in colour due to the volcanic ash which has been scattered here by the numerous volcanoes in the area over time. The ocean here is not safe for swimming, there are big waves, riptides and strong swells, so this has led to a large range of beach based activities.
Parankusumo and Pelangi beach are much quieter with less activities, so head here if you just want to lie in the sun and enjoy the soft sand without lots of people around you, but if seafood is your passion then you must go to Depok beach. Pantai Depok has more activities available, a bit like Parangtritis, but is not as busy, and also is becoming famous for its fresh seafood! This is where many of the local fishermen in the Yogyakarta region land their catch of the day.
Whichever beach you go to along this stretch of coastline near Jogja, either at Parangtritis, Parankusumo, Pantai Pelangi or Depok beach you will find the same soft, dark volcanic sand and no natural shade, so my top travel tip for anyone visiting the beaches near Jogjakarta is to bring your own shade!
