NOTE: The case fatality rate (CFR) of (deaths)/(cases diagnosed) of 5.5 percent=128/2307 is NOT the infection fatality rate (deaths)/(number infected). Cases are generally sick people who seek medical attention, go to a hospital emergency room etc. The case fatality rate for most diseases are substantially higher than the infection fatality rate. This is well known. Most people who are infected with the COVID-19 coronavirus are asymptomatic or have a very mild case and do not seek medical attention. They are not included in the cases on the Santa Clara County dashboard for the most part. Worldwide studies are showing an infection fatality rate of 0.08 to 1.0 percent -- the median value over the studies is about 0.28 percent. The only study so far in Santa Clara County has shown an infection fatality rate of about 0.1 to 0.2 percent. The risk depends strongly on age and pre-existing medical conditions, something common with all or most respiratory illnesses. Since Santa Clara County has very close ties to China we would expect a huge outbreak in Santa Clara County and NOT New York City, especially with substantial aerosol transmission which is likely as the references provided show. Presumably there is some large systematic difference between New York City area and the Bay Area such as warm, sunny weather in the Bay Area.
