5 Smallest Cat Breeds
Humans and cats have lived together for thousands of years. In modern times, we provide them with food and security while they provide us with funny moments and a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
We all know that the smaller something is, the cuter it is too. So here are 5 of the smallest cat breeds;
Rusty Spotted Cat: One small cat that is yet to be tamed is the Rusty Spotted Cat. Thought to be the smallest wild cat in the world, it lives mainly in forests and rocky areas throughout India and Sri Lanka.
It gets its name from the rust-coloured spots which appear on its back and sides. Adults of the species measure anywhere from 35 to 48 centimetres in length with a 15 to 30 centimetre long tail. They weigh between just 0.9 and 1.6 kilograms. The Rusty Spotted Cat has been listed as "near threatened" by conservationists due to the destruction of the forests it calls home.
Sand Cat (Sand Dune Cat): As you can probably guess from its name, the Sand Cat or Sand Dune Cat lives in the desert. The species is spread out among deserts in North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.
It is well adapted to its sandy environment with long hairs covering the soles of its feet. It can tolerate extremely hot or cold temperatures from -5 degrees celcius to 52 degrees celsius. When temperatures exceed these amounts, the sand cat retreats into burrows.
The species is recognizable by a flat, wide head, short legs, and a relatively long tail of between 23 to 31 centimetres. Its average head-and-body length measures from 39 to 52 centimetres.
Sand Cats are continuing to breed and thrive. Their conservation status was downgraded from 'near threatened' to 'least concerned' in 2016.
American Curl: The 'curl' of the American Curl Cat refers to its ears which curve inwards towards its skull. Typically, this type of cat is smaller than average but their size does vary a lot due to a diverse gene pool.
The American Curl is said to be quieter than other breeds but can form a strong bond with its owner. Extra care should be taken to ensure that their ears stay clean and healthy. Other than that, they are a very low maintenance pet.
An easygoing kitty, it can be playful and is generally quite friendly. This makes it an excellent choice for families who have older children.
Munchkin Cat: The Munchkin Cat has a unique look. Its body is only slightly smaller than average but its legs are very short due to a natural genetic mutation. This is similar to the condition of some dog breeds such as Corgis or Dachshunds.
Despite their little legs, these fluffy felines still love to play and they can move quickly.
They are undeniably cute, but if you plan on adopting one then you are best advised to research the potential health problems which they can suffer from.
Singapura Cat: Singapura Cats are widely acknowledged as being the smallest breed of cat in the world. They were bred from cats which roamed the streets in Singapore, where they are now considered to be a national treasure.
At half the size of an average cat, most weigh no more than 2 kilograms. These adorable felines have a petite, muscular body so they are very agile and love to climb. They are full of confidence and can be quite mischievous.
With their big eyes and long ears, it's hard not to adore these tiny troublemakers.
