Whenever Dave Grohl sits behind a drum kit to record music, the end product usually comes with a hit song stamp provided. He drives the songs forward like very few drummers with his signature heavy-footed and precise beats. But beyond that, he has an uncanny ability to create memorable drum patterns and fills.
Everlong is Foo Fighters' one of the most streamed songs ever. I would argue the drums play a huge part in that:
00:21 The beat played against the main riff, is catchy and recognizable.
The drum fills 01:29 and 01:40 raise the song's energy levels to the highest highs. They are consistent throughout the choruses, helping to make them more memorable.
The subtle shifts in dynamics, such as at 02:07, help create and eventually release tension.
Everlong is delivered with such intensity that you almost forget it’s essentially a love song. On the other hand, when Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl are concerned, what else would you expect? Either way, in the case of a banger like this, it's hard not to lose one's head over it!
