Today i want to take you through one commonly encountered problem in our daily lives and that is something related to our health and technology. To be specific, it is known as digital eye strain.
With the boom in digital technology in 21st century, digital screens are no longer an asset of any institution or a particular financially well of family, like it used to be, when I was in primary classes of my schooling. Digital screens in the form of mobile phoes has now become essential part of our lives. They are now an asset of our pocket.
On one hand, this technological boom has eased our lives while on the other hand, we are also paying for inherent adversities.
Digital Eye Strain, as the name Implies is basically a term used for group of symptoms related to eyes etc reaulting from prolonged and protracted use of computer, tablet, e-reader and cell phone etc. DES also known as computer vision syndrome, may manifest in the form of any of the following symptom(s) like , irritation in eyes, dry or red eyes, blurring of vision or double vision, watering from eyes etc. One more point to understand is that not only eyes are affected but other non -ocular symptoms like headache, neck or back pain, shoulder pain, dizziness/Vertigo etc may be predominant features. it is not necessary that all these symptoms must be present for DES.
i am sure all of us may have experienced or we experience these symptoms on day to day basis. However the point to highlight here is that, certain factors are likely to add fuel to fire. Need of hour is to point out those factors and try to rectify them. Some of the common catalysts are
Poor lighting at work place.
More Brighter digital displays.
Improper viewing distances.
Inappropriate sitting posture
Preexisring uncorrected vision problems.
Too young or too old.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
Digital screens have now become necessity of life. So it is useless to mention, avoid use of these gadgets. So measures must be directed to kill two birds with same stone. Here I am putting some measures
:-
Follow 20/20/20 Rule
After every 20 minutes of computer or amy other digital screen use , look at the distance of 20 feet for 20 seconds.
Preventive Eye Care
Even in individuals with no visual defects, glasses to prevent glare of screen are available and should be used. In people with visual impairment, glasses prescribed by health care professional must be used.
APPROPRIATE BODY POSITIONING
I shall tell you sone tips to check correct positioning of your body and system.
Sit comfortably on a seat with your back vertically straight and touching the back rest of your seat. Try to attain similar position while using your computer in sitting position.
Check for your feet positioning. Foot should be lying flat on ground.
While typing , assure that arms are resting on arm rest of your seat.
Keep computer screen at least 15 to 20 degrees below eye level (about 4 or 5 inches) as measured from the center of the screen and 20 to 28 inches from the eyes.
ANTI-GLARE SCREEN .
Practice use of screen glare filter to minimize the amount of light reflected from screen.
Personalise your computer settings.
Personalise your computer or mobile phone settings viz brightness , font size , background etc so as to make them eye friendly.
Interesting, I've just watched a YouTube video about setting up desk ergonomics. And then get recommended to this article. Btw, had a great read. I'm a web dev by profession so often look for ways to keep my body & mind working efficiently and 20/20/20 rule is definitely what I'm going to try now, lol.
