Mortal Engines (2018)
Mortal Engines is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film set in a future where cities are mounted on massive, mobile platforms and roam the Earth, scavenging resources from smaller towns. This world, known as "Municipal Darwinism," has emerged after a catastrophic event known as the "Sixty-Minute War," which devastated the planet.
The story follows Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), a young woman with a tragic past, who seeks revenge against Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving), a powerful and ruthless engineer responsible for the death of her parents. Hester is initially pursued by Valentine, but her path crosses with Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), a young man from a large mobile city called London. After a confrontation, Tom and Hester find themselves on a dangerous journey to stop Valentine’s plans, which involve using a powerful weapon to destroy smaller cities and dominate the world.
As they travel across the wastelands, they encounter allies and enemies, and the story delves into themes of power, survival, and the consequences of exploiting resources. The film is visually stunning, featuring large-scale action sequences and a world full of futuristic technology, while exploring the tension between progress and destruction.
