Greetings to everyone, I welcomed you all once again to the eighth lesson of the English Language Session. I am @abu78 and today I would like us to continue with Tenses. I hope to give my best to the understanding of all. Without much ado, let's go straight to business.

I hope and believe that last week's lesson was well understood.
It was quite unfortunate that I didn't get any participants for my homework post last week from any of my students, I hope it is not anything bad.

Types of Tenses

As we already discussed the present tense, we shall be looking at Past tense and Future tense in this lesson.

Past Tense:- as the name suggests, is used to indicate actions that have happened in the past. It is sub-divided into simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense, and past perfect continuous tense. Now we shall discuss them one by one below here in this article.

  • Simple Past Tense: This type of past tense is used to indicate a past action that has happened already and it mostly moves with an adverb of time. It can also stand alone without the adverb of time coming into it. They are just used for past actions or habits. For example;
  1. Andrews went to Church.
  2. Sandra passed very well in her examinations
  3. Samuel slept in the room.

  • Past Continuous Tense:This is one of the most important tenses in the English language, especially in Grammar. It is used to show what one was in the middle of doing at a specific or particular time in the past. For example;
  1. They were playing football on the field.
  2. Lizzy was cooking in the Kitchen yesterday
  3. I was learning in the Potch.

  • Past Perfect Tense: This type of past tense is used in showing or expressing an event that happened in the past. It is quite easy to understand and be used in sentences. It is used to express the action that took place earlier when two events or actions happened in the past. For example;
  1. We were eating when the fight began.
  2. We were too late when the lecturer began teaching
  3. She taught she knew the man but she was wrong.

  • Past Perfect Continuous Tense: This type of past tense is used to express an event or action that began before a certain time in the past and further it to some time in the past. For example;
  1. Had the children been playing outside the house?
  2. Jessica was very exhausted. She had been singing.
  3. Tommy had been playing outside when his Father arrived.

Future Tense: This type of tense as the name suggests, is also used to express future events or actions. It is sub-divided into; simple future tense, future continuous tense, future perfect tense, and future perfect continuous tense. Now we shall discuss them one by one here in this article.

  • Simple Future Tense: The simple future tense is used in showing actions or events that will happen in the future. There is a rule that is forming simple future tense. Rule = Will/Shall + Verb (in the 1st form). For example;
  1. The Lecturer will teach tomorrow.
  2. The Students Will play football tomorrow.
  3. They will write examinations on Monday.

  • Future Continuous Tense: This type of future tense is used to express an event or an action that is continuously happening in the future. For example;
  1. The Lecturers will be going on strike on Monday
  2. I will be visiting the Library tomorrow morning
  3. They will be distributing the ID cards on Monday at 9 am.

  • Future Perfect Tense: This type of future tense is used to express an event that will take place in the future and will complete within a certain time in the future. This means that it is used to express that an event will happen in the future with a stipulated time. For example,
  1. I will start my training at 8 am
  2. They will begin the work at 1 pm.

  • Future Perfect Continuous: This type of future tense expresses an action that will begin at a stipulated time in the future and will go on in the future for some time. It focuses on the duration of time for an activity that will go on in the future before another event or action. For example;
  1. Friday at 7 am, Daniel will be on his way to his Hometown

I would end here and leave below an assignment for all to participate. Thank you all for your time.
