Greetings to everyone, I welcomed you all once again to the fifth lesson of the English Language Session. I am @abu78 and today I would like us to look at **conjunctions**. I hope to give my best to the understanding of all. Without much ado, let's go straight to business.

What is Conjunction?

Conjunctions are words that are used in joining words, clauses, and or phrases together. There are three types of conjunctions and they are; coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, and correlative conjunctions. Examples of conjunctions include; and, or, but, nor, yet, so,, etc. Using an example in a sentence;

  1. He must weep, or he will die.

  2. Johnny is working but he is greedy too.

  3. They watched movies and a play on weekends.

  4. Let's meet at school or in the house.

Types of Conjunctions?

1. Coordinating Conjunctions:-

Coordinating conjunctions as the name suggest are used in joining words, phrases, or independent clauses together in a sentence. They are also used in linking grammatical parts of the same sentence. Coordinating conjunctions are seven in number and they can be remembered easily using the word FANBOYS. The first letter of this word represents conjunction and I would expand it in the table below.

FANBOYS

It should be noted that before using a conjunction to link two sentences a comma should be placed before the conjunction. Again, we should also note that coordinating conjunctions must always link similar elements, i.e. subject + subject, verb phrase + verb phrase, or sentence + sentence. Examples include the following:

  1. I would love to eat yam and fish

  2. I like to learn, but I am soo sick.

  3. My brother is late, so he missed the bus.

2. Subordinating Conjunctions:-

Subordinating conjunctions are used in linking an independent clause and a dependent clause. It should be noted that the independent clause should contain both a subject and a verb acting as a complete sentence whilst the dependent clause should also contain a subject and a verb but shouldn't be a complete sentence. Subordinating conjunctions are classified with respect to what is being used for, i.e. time, cause, effect, condition, etc.

It should be noted that a comma must be placed at the end of the adverbial phrase when it precedes the main clause in a sentence. Subordinating conjunctions include; after, since, because, although, while, even if, etc. Examples include the following;

  1. We are going to the field, after we finish eating.

  2. Even if you have eaten your food, you still have to be go for another.

  3. While Tina was waiting for the bus, she eat her breakfast.

3. Correlative Conjunctions:-

This type of conjunction is used in pair and they link similar elements together in a sentence. We should note that whenever we are linking a singular and plural subjects, the subject closest to the verb is what determines the singularity or plurality of the verb. I would provide a table below which indicates an example of correlative conjunction and how they are used.

ConjunctionsWhat it linksExample
either ... ornoun + nounToday's birthday is either Fred or Edward's.
neither ... norsubject + subjectNeither the policeman nor the Soldiers were able to identify the thief.
both ... andsubject + subjectBoth my aunty and and my uncle likes me.

This brings us to end of the lesson for today and also the end of the topic as well. Please leave any questions or enquiry below here in the comment section of this article and I would be happy to help you out.
