Greetings to everyone, I welcomed you all once again to the ninth lesson of the English Language Session. I am @abu78 and today I would like us to deal with Phrases. I hope to give my best to the understanding of all. Without much ado, let's go straight to business.

I hope and believe that last week's lesson was well understood.

What are Phrases

Phrases are meaningful sequences of words that function together in a sentence. Phrases contain neither a subject nor a verb and it's not a complete sentence that can stand on its own. For example;

  • The lady is wearing a nice red blouse.

  • The man with a blue shirt is coming.

  • I love writing nice stories.

What are the Types of Phrases

There are seven types of phrases and they include the following;

  • Noun Phrase
  • Adjective/Adjectival Phrase
  • Adverb/Adverbial Phrase
  • Verb/Verbal Phrase
  • Infinitives Phrase
  • Prepositional Phrase
  • Gerund Phrase
  • Participle Phrase

Let's now discuss each of the types of phrases we have above.

Noun Phrase

Noun phrase as the name suggests refers to the type of phrase that contains a noun and other related words and it functions or plays the role of a noun in a sentence. It functions as the subject, object, or compliment. For example;

  • Playing games is my hobby [subject]

  • Johnson likes swimming in the pool [object]

  • The fat man was advised not to eat fatty fast food [object]

Adjective/Adjectival Phrase

The adjectival phrase refers to a group of words that plays the role of an adjective in a sentence. The adjective phrase describes and modifies a noun or a pronoun in the sentence. For example;

  • The Lady is wearing a soft silk shirt.

  • The man I saw was an extremely intelligent man

  • The black big cat is under the table.

Adverb/Adverbial Phrase

The adverbial phrase refers to a group of words that plays the role of an adverb in a sentence. The adverb phrase describes and modifies a verb or an adjective or another adverb in the sentence. It explains how, why, when, where of an adjective or an adverb in a sentence. For example;

  • I will submit my project in a minute time

  • The guy brought flowers for his girlfriend

  • When he was summoned, he stepped out from the room with slow steps

Verb/Verbal Phrase

A verbal phrase is the type of phrase which contains the main verb plus any modal and/or an auxiliary verb in the sentence. Generally, the main verb comes last in the verb phrase in the sentence. For example;

  • They must have drunk a delicious drink from the party

  • Those men are trying very hard

  • The children are eating in the room.

Infinitives Phrase

The Infinitives phrase is the type of phrase that begins with the infinitives form of the verb i.e. to + simple form of the verb plus related words. (complement and or a modifier). Infinitives phrase functions as either a noun or an adjective or an adverb in a sentence. For example;

  • She liked to sleep early

  • They made a plan to buy a house

  • I shouted to inform them about snake

Prepositional Phrase

This is a type of phrase that contains a group of words that commence with a preposition and includes the object of the preposition in the sentence. It also includes the modifier of the object and it either functions as either an adverb or an adjective. For example;

  • She is going to market

  • They lived in a small village

  • The boy in the classroom is brilliant.

Gerund Phrase

Gerund phrase as the suggests contains a gerund (verb + ing), its objects, and modifiers in a sentence. The gerund phrase functions like a noun that is utilized as a subject or object or a compliment. For example;

  • My favorite hobby is playing video games

  • I like playing video games

  • Playing video games brings me joy.

Participle Phrase

A participle phrase is a type of phrase that consists of a participle (present or past) plus a modifier in the sentence. Participle phrase functions as an adjective in a sentence and is separated by commas in sentences. For example;

  • The dog, barking loudly, is hungry

  • The man, sitting under the tree, is my father

  • The Chair, made of aluminum, is not expensive.

  2. In your own words, list and explain the types of phrases we have including two examples each.

Class rules:

There are some rules for enrolling in the course that the students have to follow all the time.

  • Students must write at least 250 words.

  • Students must be serious and must always stick to the course.

  • Students must attend classes on a regular basis and complete the homework that teachers will give them in class.

  • Students must submit assignments before the deadline.

  • No plagiarism is allowed.

  • Students who will miss three assignments they will be taken out of the class.

  • Learners have to be respectful to each other.

  • Being abusive toward anyone either teacher or fellow students will result in being permanently banned from the community and discord.

  • Homework Task runs until 11th February 2022, Time- 11:59 PM UTC.
