Greetings to everyone, I welcomed you all once again to the third lesson of the English Language Session. I am @abu78 and today I would like us to commence with the topic Prepositons. I hope to give my best to the understanding of all. Without much ado, let's go straight to business.
What is Preposition?

A preposition refers to a word that is used in linking nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words in a sentence. Prepositions join people, objects, time, and also locations of a sentence. Prepositions are generally simple and short words. We can say that prepositions are words that help to glue words together in a sentence. examples of words of preposition include; in, on, at, after, before, about, until, during, etc.

The Two Rules of Preposition?

red line.png

There are two general importance rules to recall when using prepositions and they include the following;

  • the first rule states that specific prepositions must be used or are needed to make sentences clear. An example is the prepositions in and on which cannot be substituted or exchanged in a sentence. A good example is given below;
  1. John, I want to see you in the house.
  2. John, I want to see you on the house.

The first sentence implies that he wants to see John inside the house whilst the second sentence implies that he wants to see John on top of the house.
We can see from the examples above that these two sentences mean two different things and cannot be substituted.

  • the second rule states that prepositions, in general, must be followed by either nouns or pronouns.
