1.Define phrases and give five examples.

A sentence is a set of words used to complete a sentence without a verb. Phrases are an important part of English grammar. It helps to complete the sentence and make it meaningful. A phrase is always in a sentence but there is no sentence in a phrase.

I have given below a few examples of phrases.

✳️after the breakfast (Prepositional Phrase)
✳️the pretty girl (Noun Phrase)
✳️were waiting for the result (Verb Phrase)
✳️sitting in the library (Participle Phrase)
✳️highly emotive (Adjective Phrase)

2.In your own words, list and explain the types of phrases we have including 2 examples each.

The phrases highlight the main point that needs to be made in the sentence. I have listed a few such phrases below.

1.Noun Phrases
2.Adjective Phrases
3.Adverb/Adverbial Phrases
4.Verb/Verbal Phrases
5.Infinitive Phrases
6.Prepositional Phrases
7.Gerund Phrases
8.Participle Phrases

I am now preparing to illustrate each of the phrases listed above separately.

Noun Phrases

When a phrase based on a noun is active, it is called a verb phrase. Modifiers here include the, a, of them, with, her. Also modifiers can come before or after the noun. Therefore, a noun containing modifiers in any form can be easily identified as a noun phrase.

  1. We are sorry about her dream fading.
  2. The students coming to the lecture hall.

Adjective Phrase

Adjective phrase is used when a sentence is active based on an adjective. The adjective here can be found anywhere in the sentence. An adjective phrase serves to describe the subject of the procedure.

  1. Namal is an extremely honest chef.
  2. The girl in the red frock is my lovely sister.

A Verb Phrase consists of verbs and modifiers. That is, the verb phrase helps to say what needs to be expressed in the sentence.

  1. My mother is fixing us some snacks.
  2. I will get you a supermarket.

Infinitive Phrase

An infinitive verb begins with an infinitive verb as a noun or adjective. This can be easily identified using the formula to + simple present tense verb. I have listed some such examples below.

  1. It is time to go to the party.
  2. This is very difficult to understand.

Prepositional Phrase

A prepositional phrase is a phrase that executes a function or adjective that includes modifiers.

  1. They are under treatment for Covid-19.
  2. Could you put your answers down on paper?

Gerund Phrase

Gerund Phrase is a phrase that begins with a noun and contains a noun. In Gerund Phrase the verb is verb + ing.

  1. After facing the exam , I felt so happy.
  2. You can watch the movie when you've finished doing your homework.

When a sentence begins with a past or present participle, it can be identified as a participle phrase. The following are some phrases that include such participle phrase.

  1. By coming to the point, she answers every questions.
  2. She was waiting for her friend sitting in the bench.

All I have presented above is my homework assignment for Homework Season 1 Week 9. I expanded my knowledge through this phrases lesson and I respectfully thank the teacher who explained the lesson for that.
