Hope you all are well and enjoying your happy and healthy life. I apologize for my few days absence due to increased stress of study. Due to which I can't write post about my profession and therapeutic exercises. Today, I am sharing about shoulder elevation movement which is important for your shoulder strength.
Muscles
Muscle | Origin | Insertion |

Grading
Position of patient
The position of the patient will be short sitting over side of the table.
Position of Therapist
The therapist will stand behind the patient. To give resistance hands countered over the shoulders in the backward direction. The arm of the therapist will be straight, to provide enough resistance transferring the weight of the therapist by his arms to the muscle of the patient.
Test
The patient will elevate the shoulder. The patient will be in the sitting position, the test will be performed on both sides of the shoulder at the same time.
instructions to patient
The therapist will say to the patient raise your shoulders. Hold it. Don't let me push them down.
Grade 5 Normal
Patient will raise his shoulders with available range of motion. And hold against the maximum resistance.
Grade 4 good
In this grade the resistance is moderate. The patient will raise his shoulders against moderate resistance.
Grade 3 fair
Position of patient and therapist
The position of the patient and therapist will be same as in the above grades but the difference is that the resistance will change.
Test
The patient will raise his shoulders through available range of motion.
Instructions to patient
Again patient will raise his shoulders towards his ears.
Grade 3 fair
Elevates the shoulders through the range with no resistance.
Grade 0,1,2
Position of patient
The position of the patient will be prone, spine or fully supported on the table.
Spine position
In Spine position head will be in neutral position.
Prone position
In this position the head is turned to one side for patient's comfort.
Position of Therapist
The therapist will be stand at the side of testing side. Support test shuolder in one palm of hand. The other hand will palpate the upper trapezius. The second site of palpation is the upper trapezius adjecent to the cervical vertebrae.
Test
The patient will raise the shuolder towards the ear.
Instructions
The patient will raise his shoulders.
Grade 2 poor
In this grade the range of motion is full. The patient will raise his shoulders with full range of motion. The position is gravity eliminated.
Grade 1 Trace
The fibers of the upper trapezius can be palpated at the level of clavicle or neck. The muscle will elevate lies deep and it will be difficult to palpate. It can be felt as its insertion on the vertebral border of the scapula which is superior scapular spine.
Importance
- This test is perform because most of time by hanging purses and briefcase can cause any damage in your muscles bulk, winging of scapula(abnormality in scapula movement).
- So, by doing this you can check your muscles strength and then perform some more exercises to improve them like wall plank, one arm dumbbell, sphinx.
