Mr Abubakar Suleman was a huge, dark and scary man, who used his weep to communicate more than words especially to us his students.
In my early years as a form 1 student in the Government Secondary school Buea, Cameroon. All I wanted to do, was go to school to learn and play. I didn't care if the teacher would come or not, I just wanted to see my friends too and play as well. My first two weeks was much fun as we encountered different sets of friendly teachers who made learning so easy for us. We enjoyed moments like this for quite some time, until Mr. Abubakar Suleman our French teacher came.
Negative Reasons
Being in a bilingual country of English and French, both languages were to be taught in all schools and universities. Growing up in the anglophone region of the country, french was quite difficult for me an a majority of our friends. However, I was eager to learn French but Mr. Abubakar made our hatred for the language increased so badly, with his terrible mode of discipline.
Mr. Abubakar could not speak English and we too could not speak French, except for some few bilingual students we had in class. Whenever he asked a question and I couldn't answer, he'll trash the hell out of us. Every Tuesday and Fridays were marked as crying days because these were the days we had french. This attitude continued right till the end of the academic year. So as a result french became my worst subject. For anyone who spoke french around me made me angry because all I could remember we're the memories of the agony I went through in the hands of that man.😔😔
Positive Reasons
When we moved to the next class, he wasn't the one teaching french but still that hatred was there. Despite the new teachers approach, I still did not want to have anything to do with french.
Years passed after until I was in form five in an examination class. Our principal selected some students to go represent the school in a competition that was to take place in the francophone part of the country in 4 months time. Fortunately I was one of them. The cash price was to get a 1 year scholarship and the requirements was to be an explicit bilingual student. It was a challenge for me and some friends but that scholarship was the only thing I needed because I only ever got to pay my fees by God's grace for it wasn't easy for my parents.
2 days later we got news that our French teacher will be Mr. Abubakar Suleman. Some like me who knew him were angry and already spreading news of his wickedness to other new students.
When Me. Abubakar Suleman arrived, he recognized me and made me class prefect for his class. From there I was obliged to do my best to find an iota of goodness in him so as to be able to understand his class. Well Mr Abubakar Suleman was a changed man by then and he made learning french so good that students whom we had told that he was a wicked man, started calling us liars saying we were just too lazy to learn. However I later made the teacher my friend and learning french became much easy. Thanks to his good teachings, we overcame the competition and I did get the scholarship and I later passed my ordinary levels examination with a B on french. Now I can say I am bilingual thanks to Mr. Abubakar.
Conclusion
I learnt that in order for one to get to succeed in a subject that he/she hates, he/she must first grow to love the teacher so as to love and better understand the subject.
Thanks.
