Steem Skillshare English Class | Season 1 | Week 1 | Pronunciation

Hello, everyone I am very glad to see the progress of this English course that was initiated this month. I am delighted to see that teachers and students are working on it and trying to give their best.

As mentioned before, my class is supposed to be held every Friday, and here I am today with my first free English class on Steem skillshare. Today's topic is pronunciation.

DEFINITION OF PRONUNCIATION

Pronunciation is the right way to create sounds in a word, in other words, to pronounce a word properly.

IMPORTANCE OF PRONUNCIATION

When it comes to developing one's speaking ability, pronounciation is crucial. It significantly improves the speech quality. To avoid misunderstandings and promote effective communication, it is critical to have good pronunciation. Language learners can improve their speaking skills in a short amount of time by learning pronunciation.

HOW TO IMPROVE PRONUNCIATION

English is not a phonetic language. As a result, the spelling does not assist learners in learning proper pronunciation. For example, the word "colonel" sounds like "kur.nuhl," which is way different than the spelling.

So how can someone know the right pronunciation? Well, I am going to give you some direction for that which will help you to develop a good level of pronunciation:

• Phonetics and the IPA system: Having a decent knowledge of phonetics (the study of sounds) and IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) system helps learners improve their pronunciation significantly.

But this process is quite complicated and, oftentimes, people find it difficult to learn. I don't recommend students to go for it unless one is highly passionate about perfecting their pronunciation.

• Listening practice: Listening to English podcasts, interviews, TV shows, and movies regularly helps to improve pronunciation. But for this, students have to put their concentration while listening to it.

One needs to practice intensive listening regularly in order to improve their pronunciation. A student can accomplish this by listening to English audio for at least 15 minutes per day with complete focus.

• Authentic resources: Checking English pronunciation from an authentic source will help learners to know the right pronunciation and avoid confusion.

Today I am going to recommend some free and authentic resources that students can follow in order to know the proper pronunciation. These are-

The Cambridge online dictionary
Oxford learners' dictionary

These two are my favourite tools for learning proper pronunciation. It will allow one to know how to pronounce a word properly with an IPA transcript and audio attachment, which is really great.

HOMEWORK TASK

1. Define pronunciation in your own words.
2. What is the importance of pronunciation?
3. Research on the two websites I mentioned for improving pronunciation and mention which one you have found helpful and why.

There are some rules for enrolling on the course that the students have to follow all the time.

• Students must write a post on steem skillshare using at least 250 words.
• Set 10% beneficiary to @steem.skillshare.
• No plagiarism is allowed.
• Students must be serious and must always stick to the course.
• Students must attend classes on a regular basis and complete the homework that teachers will give them in class.
• Students must submit assignments before deadline.
• Students who will miss three assignments they will be taken out of the class.
• Learners have to be respectful to each other.
• Being abusive toward anyone either teacher or fellow students will result in being permanently banned from the community and discord.
