Steem Skillshare English Class | Season 1 | Week 2 | Pronunciation

Hello, everyone. What are you doing today? I hope you are doing great. Today I am here presenting my second class on pronunciation.

As I mentioned in my first class, pronunciation is all about knowing the right way to produce a sound. So to master your pronunciation, you need to know the sounds well.

In English there are 44 sounds. Note that I am not talking about alphabet or letters. I am talking about English sounds.

Classification of sounds:

1. Vowel sounds: these are sounds that can be produced without any obstruction in the vocal cord. For example- /aɪ /sound as in right, /əʊ/ sound as goat etc.

2. Consonant sounds: these are the sounds that are produced by blocking air in the mouth. For example- /p/ sound as in pet, /d/ sound as in dog etc.

In British accent, there are 19 vowel sounds and 25 consonant sounds.

To express all these sounds, there are some symbols that are being used, which are called IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols.

Knowing the phonetic symbols makes it very easy to understand each and every sound. You can get this phonetic transcription from the Oxford and Cambridge dictionary that I mentioned in my first lesson.

1. How many sounds are there in English?
2. Classify sounds and give examples of each.
3. Research on the two category of sounds that I mentioned and write in brief what do you learn about it.
