Hello friends..welcome back to another interesting lesson in graphic design. Today we would be checking out another interesting lesson which I tag "Shapes in Graphic design".

Shapes are one of the integral and fundamental part of graphic design. You will at one point or the other make use of it in your designs,am even tempted to say shapes are inevitable in graphic design.
Do you know that shapes can be used to communicate feelings and convey our message in such a way that it's received well by our viewers. We need to understand that there is pyscological side to shapes and understanding this will help inform you choice of shape.
Let's check out examples of shape we use in graphic design.

Types of Shapes

Triangle

Source
Am sure a triangle is not new to us at all,we been taught and shown the image of a triangle since we started learning as kid in school. A triangle is a polygonal shape with three edges and vertical. Generally, triangles are used to represent direction and Motion.it can be used as pointer in your graphic work and to highlight or emphasize.Triangles are also used in a design work to portray certain meaning or pass certain messages. For example, if a triangle points upwards in it right form it means,it could mean balance and stability if it vice versal then it could mean instability or risk.

Rectangles & Square

I chose to combine these shapes because they have things in common. I also want to believe we are not new to these shapes too.
These shapes are formed by straight lines meeting at a points and right angles connecting with each other. The psychological meaning of these shape is reliability and security. These shapes are common in graphic design,if you check fliers, banner and cards, you will see these shapes widely dominating.

Circle, Ovals and eclipse.

These are another interesting shapes we need to consider. I decided to also group these shapes because they have things in common too. If you ain't familiar with shapes, you would mix them up thinking they are all the same. These shape are also very common even when compared to a triangle and they are always obvious. They look mild and softer, this is as of the fact that is has no edge. These shape also depicts eternity or mystery. Eternity is something without end or begining, you will agree with me that you can't really tell where a circle starts or end...can you? Smiles
The used case of circle is mostly seen in the design of logos, icons or some sort of background for a good design.

Pentagon's Hexagons and Octagons

These are shapes that have many edges. Pentagon has five edges, Hexagon has six edges while octagon have eight edges. Although these shapes are not very common in graphic design but sometimes we use them as occasion demands. They are mostly common in infographic designs which helps in organizing you information in such a way that makes your design looks less cumbersome and appealing.

I will like to wrap it here for this class,in the next class we will continue from where we stop and then see how much more we can explore about shape.
