Define phrases and give five examples.
A Phrases is a group of words in a sentence that expresses the overall structure of the sentence. It can be a long or short word but does not include a subject and object. Therefore phrases cannot stand alone in a sentence because they can't give a complete meaning. Here is the example
- In the sky
- Besides the window
- Along with the table
- After the meal
- Have been playing
In your own words, list and explain the types of phrases we have including two examples each.
Noun Phrase
This is the type of phrase that acts as a noun in the sentence. It consists of a noun and other related words that modify the noun.
Examples of noun Phrase
- They hired an expensive beautiful red car.
- One of my sister never drinks a coffee.
Adjective / Adjectival Phrase
It is a phrase that works as an adjective in a sentence. It gives more information about nouns and pronouns. It comprises adjectives modifiers and other words that modify the noun or pronoun.
Examples of Adjective Phrase
- A girl standing in the shop is my sister.
- A lady with short hair is walking in the hallway.
Adverb / Adverbial Phrase
This type of phrase acts as an adverb in the sentence. Just like an adverb, it gives information about a verb or other adverb in the sentence. It includes an adverb and other words which act as an adverb phrase.
Examples of Adverb Phrase
- Leah drives a car at very high speed.
- They walked along the hallway.
Verb / Verbal Phrase
A verb phrase is a group of the main verb and helping verb like an auxiliary verb within a sentence.
Examples of Verb Phrase
- He is writing a letter.
- They have been playing volleyball since morning
Infinitive Phrase
An infinitive phrase comprises an infinitive word to plus the form of verb and its modifier is linked to the infinitive. This type of phrase act as a noun, adjective, or adverb in the sentence.
Examples of Infinitive Phrase
- I sang a song to please the audience.
- The teacher made a plan to help the student.
Prepositional Phrase
This phrase is comprising a preposition and an object of the preposition either a noun or pronoun. It also contains another modifier.
Examples of Prepositional Phrase
- She is sleeping on the floor.
- The student looked at the blackboard.
Gerund Phrase
This gerund phrase is a group of verb + ing and other related words are linked to the gerund phrase. It will function as a noun in the sentence.
Examples of Gerund Phrase
- She enjoys listening to music.
- Leah started writing the report.
Participle Phrase
A participle phrase consists of a group of present participle or a past participle, modifiers, and other linked words. It is punctuated with a comma and it always acts as an adjective that modifies a noun in a sentence.
Examples of Participle Phrase
- Lorie got a mail, stating about her exam.
- The chair, made of wood, looks very beautiful.
